JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Lenoir-Rhyne's Marie Mauhar went 5-for-5 with three doubles to spark the L-R offense and provides runs on a day where scoring was hard to come by to lead L-R to a South Atlantic Conference sweep against Carson-Newman on Sunday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex. L-R took the opener, 1-0, and picked up a 4-3 win in Game 2.
With the wins, L-R improves to 31-10 overall and 7-3 in SAC play, while C-N falls to 19-15 and 2-6.
Game 1 – Lenoir-Rhyne 1, Carson-Newman 0
Lenoir-Rhyne starter Dawon Millwood (WP, 19-5) pitched a four-hit shutout as the Bears took a Game 1, 1-0. She struck out C-N's Shelby Robertson in about a 12-pitch at bat to strand the tying and winning runs in scoring position to end Game 1.
The Lady Eagles threatened in the seventh as Bethany Davis reached after being hit by a Millwood pitch. Pinch runner Cassie Elliott would reach third as L-R intentionally walked Cassidy Skeen to eventually retire Robertson in a gritty at-bat.
The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles stranded eight runners, but couldn't push the tying run across against Millwood.
L-R scored the game's lone run in the second as Mauhar's RBI single scored Sarah Atkins, who doubled to center to lead off the inning.
C-N starter Mary Shealy (LP, 19-14) took one of her tougher losses of the year. She only struck out one, but held L-R to five hits.
Mauhar was 3-for-3 and had the game's lone RBI.
Skeen had two hits to lead the C-N offense.
Game 1 – Lenoir-Rhyne 4, Carson-Newman 3
Millwood the retired the final 12 batters she faced to overcome a shaky start and hang on for a 4-3 win in Game 2.
L-R's Haley Jarman singled and scored in the first to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Jarman advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from Jessica Fellmeth.
C-N loaded the bases and had three hits as part of a two-run first inning to grab an early 2-1 lead. Cassidy Skeen had a bunt single and Caitlyn Lance added a two-out RBI single as C-N answered L-R's run in the top of the first.
L-R tied the game on an RBI single by Jody Mizelle in the second. Carlee Carpenter's lined out to Kim Whaley in right field and doubled off Mizelle at first to keep the damage minimal for C-N.
L-R's defense saved the Bears, and maybe the game, in the bottom of the second. Jarman snared a rocket off the bat of C-N's Sara Kelley and third base and stepped on the bag for an inning-ending double play.
The play ended C-N's biggest threat of the day and saved at least two runs. The Lady Eagles had two runners in scoring position after three singles in the innings. Robertson delivered an RBR single to left to score Whaley and give C-N a 3-2 lead.
L-R would take the lead for good following a lead off double by Mauhar in the fifth. A sacrifice bunt from Brittany Coursen and an RBI single from Tameron Sealey gave L-R the deciding run.
Bri Shoemake had two hits in the loss and three on the day for C-N.
Carson-Newman returns to action on Tuesday with a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Tusculum. First pitch is at 2 p.m. in Greeneville, Tenn.
