JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Lee (11-3) scored seven unanswered runs to take down Carson-Newman (8-6) 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.
The loss is Carson-Newman's first non-conference loss of the season.
"Lee is a good club and off to a good start," Carson-Newman head coach Tom Griffin said. "They've got a lot of veterans but we have veterans on our squad too. I thought (Drew) Fletcher did a good job. A couple guys got their opportunity to get their feet wet and pitch. As a competitor, it's all about just going out there and competing. It all comes down to how you want to compete and the guts and backbone you have. We need to get guys to understand that."
In a losing effort, Logan Floyd (Adairsville, Ga.) extended his on-base streak to 48 straight games by recording a two-hit day.
Both teams used solid defensive work early on to keep things scoreless. After a one-out single, Bradley Soto Diaz (Davenport, Fla.) fired a rocket to retire Landon Franklin, who was trying to go first to third on the base hit. That play helped keep things scoreless in the first.
C-N put two runners on with one out, but the Flames did their part defensively. A 6-4-3 double play ended C-N's first offensive threat of the day.
Starting pitchers Drew Fletcher for C-N and Cody Turner for Lee, matched one another by each tossing three scoreless innings to start the day. Both allowed just one hit and two walks for the day.
The scoring started against the bullpen in the fourth inning. With two outs, Caden Youngblood homered for the fifth time this season to give Lee the 2-0 lead.
The Eagles would have a quick response. A Colton Evans single and a Logan Floyd double put runners on second and third with nobody out. Soto Diaz would clear the bases, driving a 3-2 pitch down the left field line to tie the game at two. Despite a four-hit inning, that's the only runs C-N would get.
The Flames applied pressure in the fifth and would take the lead for good. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch brought home Lee's third run to lead by 1.
C-N's offense would get a pair of two-out runners in the sixth, but did nothing with it.
Lee would break the game open in the seventh inning. A bunt single led to a throwing error to make it 4-2. A passed ball and a Luke Collier single brought home two more runs and the inning was capped by an Isaiah French two-run home run to make it 8-2 Flames in the seventh.
Carson-Newman's only hit in the final five innings came from Evan Mutter in the ninth inning.
The Eagles utilized eight pitchers, with four of them having scoreless outings.
Alec Wilson (Baxter, Tenn.) suffered his first career loss in 1/1 innings of work. The right-hander gave up three runs on three hits.
Five different Lee hitters had multi-hit days, led by French's three hits and two RBI.
Tyler Pickens earned his second win on the mound, firing 1/2 scoreless innings.
Carson-Newman concludes February with a three-game conference series at Anderson starting at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The series can be heard on the Eagle Sports Network at cneagles.com/live.
