Bio
2018: Coats turned in one of the best ever seasons by a Carson-Newman linebacker. Coats led the Eagles with 96 tackles, 47 of which were solo stops. Most notably, he brought home state defensive player of the week honors from the Tennessee Sportswriters Association three times in his senior season and a program-record four times in his career. He earned the three honors this year following C-N's wins over Virginia Union and Catawba, and a loss to Newberry. Coats inserted his name directly into the Carson-Newman record book with 18 tackles for loss on the year. He moved past Eric Rice who had 17 in 2006 to take over the top spot for the single-season total for that stat. Coats had a top-flight effort against Catawba when he led Carson-Newman with nine tackles. He inserted his name into the C--N record books with 5.5 tackles for loss. That's the third most in school history behind Daryl Gooden's 7.5 against Howard Payne in 1992 and William Moody's 6.0 against New Haven in 2002. The 5.5 tackles for loss are the second most in NCAA Division II this year. He wrapped up his career at Burke-Tarr Stadium with a 15-tackle effort against Lenoir-Rhyne to put a bow on his home career with a career-high for stops. He had five double-digit tackle efforts on the year.

2017: Appeared in all 11 games with four starts for the Eagles at linebacker. Coats made 43 tackles with five stops for loss as a junior. He had a pick and a pass break up on the year. Coats came on in the back half of the season with a trio of games with at least eight tackles. His coming out party was against Limestone when he registered eight stops. He backed that up with an eight-tackle performance against North Greenville followed by a season-high nine tackles against Lenoir-Rhyne.
2016: Appeared in eight games for the Eagles with five tackles. Made multiple stops against Brevard (10/8).
2015: Finished his freshman season sixth on the team with 60 tackles to go along with three stops behind the line, an interception and a pass break up. Coats played in all 12 games for the Eagles while starting five. He had his pick against Mars Hill (9/26) in a win over the Lions. He turned in a career high nine tackles in the win over the Lions before topping that with 10 tackles against Brevard (10/10). He had at least seven tackles in four games. He made a career high 1.5 tackles for loss against Catawba (9/19).
HIGH SCHOOL: Had a whopping 175 tackles in his senior year at Greenwood. Also picked off four passes and returned two for touchdowns. He is a two-time All-Lakelands and All-Region selection. Helped Greenwood to a 2012 state title.
PERSONAL: Am American Citizenship Award winner and the son of Michael and Lucinda Coats.
