MONROE, N.C. – The Carson-Newman women's golf team delivered another stellar round on Monday at the Jerry Surratt Memorial, sitting tied for 3rd at 13-over after the first round of play. The second round was suspended due to inclement weather, and 36 holes will be played on Tuesday.
The Eagles, paced by Ida Petersen and Emery Fisher, were tied for 2nd after the first round of play at even par.
Despite an early bogey, Petersen stroked three consecutive birdies and four pars to enter the back nine at 2-under. Three holes over par added a few strokes to the junior's tally, but two birdies and four holes at par allowed her to finish the round at even par and secure the first place standing after day one.
Fisher had a similar opening round to Petersen, carding two birdies and six holes at par to overcome a late bogey and enter the back nine at 1-under. Fisher added a stroke on a pair of bogeys, but six holes at par and a late birdie helped the sophomore close the round at even par and join her teammate at the top of the standings.
Sydney Thomas sits tied for 31st following a 78-stroke first round, finishing the day at 6-over. Thomas limited the damage of a pair of holes over par on the front nine with a birdie and six pars to enter the back nine at 2-over. Five bogeys on the back nine added a handful of strokes to Thomas' total, but a late birdie allowed her to finish the round at 6-over.
Madison Cline finished the day at 7-over, good for 40th after the first round of play. It was a fairly consistent front nine for Cline, stroking seven pars, but two birdies sent her to the back nine at 2-over. On the back nine, Cline added five strokes on four holes over par, but five pars helped her hold steady and finish the round at 7-over.
Anaelle Picot is tied for 48th at 8-over following the first round of play. Four bogeys on the front nine added four strokes to her total, but she limited the damage to just that with five pars to enter the back nine at 4-over. Picot had four holes over par on the day's final stretch, but a pair of bogeys helped her limit the damage and finish the round at 8-over.
At the end of day one, C-N sits atop the leaderboard, tied with No. 1 Anderson at 13-over as a team.
The Eagles await 36 holes on Tuesday, looking to solidify another stellar finish amongst a tough field. The second round of play will get underway at 8:30 a.m. with the third round shortly after.
