USC Aiken's Kornegay strikes out 12 in 2-0 win against C-N
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - University of South Carolina Aiken starter India Kornegay struck out 12 batters and held the Lady Eagles to a pair of singles as the Pacers beat Carson-Newman, 2-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex. With the win, Aiken improves to 21-10, while C-N falls to 23-18. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was called in the second inning by lightning and rain moving into the area.
Kornegay held C-N to a pair of Cassidy Skeen slap singles and walked four to complete the two-hit shutout. She improves to 17-8 on the year.
She made the most of a 1-0 lead for much of the game.
Aiken took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Lauren Jones reached with a leadoff single and scored on a wild pitch. Victoria Burkett has a sacrifice bunt to move Jones into scoring position.
The Pacers added a run in the seventh as Courtney Sadley doubled to right center and later scored on an Shannon Traylor shot into the gap in right center.
C-N threatened a few times, but could never drive a run across on Kornegay. C-N loaded the bases in the fourth on a pair of walks and Mary Shealy reached on a hit-by-pitch, but Kornegay retied Jessica Morgan to end the threat.
Shealy and Caitlin Lance each flirted with a home run on deep fly balls.
Shealy (LP, 23-18) took the loss despite pitching well. She allowed five hits and struck out three.
C-N returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday at 1 p.m. against Anderson at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex.
