Orange battles back to take series lead 2-1
Tripp Faulk’s Orange squad used a seven run sixth inning to power its way to a 10-7 come from behind victory Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex, to take a 2-1 series lead in Carson-Newman’s annual Fall World Series.
JEFFFERSON CITY, Tenn.—Tripp Faulk's Orange squad used a seven run sixth inning to power its way to a 10-7 come from behind victory Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex, to take a 2-1 series lead in Carson-Newman's annual Fall World Series.
The Blue team struck first off a one out two-run homerun to right field from Jordan Hinshaw (Elizabethon, Tenn.) in the top of the second inning. The 2-0 score would not last long, as Orange center fielder Paul Kirby (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) led off the bottom half of the frame by taking the first pitch of the at bat over the left field wall for a solo homerun to cut the deficit to 2-1 in favor of Blue.
Back-to-back singles from Brandon Roberts (Davie, Fla.) and Brendan Campbell (Yardley, Penn.) would power a three-run third inning for the Blue team. Roberts would then add on an additional run in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to bring home Trevor Lee, making the score 6-1 Blue heading to the bottom of the fifth.
After plating two more runs in the fifth, the Orange team yielded an RBI single to Gooch Greer (Dickson, Tenn.) to trail 7-3 midway through the sixth inning.
The Orange team then batted around in the sixth to take the lead while compiling seven runs. Five batters recorded an RBI in the inning, including three on an Austin Kearney (Powell, Tenn.) double to clear the loaded bases.
Following a leadoff walk from Ian Pung (Knoxville, Tenn.), Garret Cable (New Market, Tenn.) would give way to Tyler Douglass for the save. Douglass tallied two strikeouts on his way to the save in one inning of work.
Blake Winstead (Chattanooga, Tenn.) picked up the win for the Orange team after coming in relief for Hunter Dodson (Huntersville, N.C.) and starting pitcher Grant Rabbitts (Johnson City, Tenn.)
After picking up the win for the Blue team in game two of the series, Ryan Victory (Brentwood, Tenn.) would be credited with the loss after giving up seven runs in 0.2 of an inning of work.
