Carson-Newman’s Sanders named SAC Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second time this season, Carson-Newman guard Ishmael Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second time this season, Carson-Newman guard Ishmael Sanders (Cleveland, Tenn.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
He led the Eagles to a pair of convincing non-conference wins last week that improved the Eagles' record to 7-4. On the week, Sanders averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field. He also had an assist-to-turnover ratio of nearly 3-to-1.
The sophomore guard had 18 points and six rebounds on Wednesday as the Eagles pulled way from Tennessee Wesleyan, 75-60. He was a perfect 5-for-5 from inside the arc in the win in addition to five assists and two steals.
Sanders followed with 21 points and six assists in a 94-73 win over Lees-McRae on Saturday. He had 17 first-half points as the Eagles built a 28-point lead at the break and cruised in the second half. He was 4-of-9 from three-point range and 7-of-7 at the free throw line in the win.
For the season, Sanders is averaging a team-high 19.5 points per game and leads the Eagles with 41 made three-point field goals.
