JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (12-6, 9-5 South Atlantic Conference) will try to quickly wash the ill-taste of a three-point OT loss at Wingate Saturday with the middle game of a three-game road swing to Anderson (9-9, 6-8 SAC) for a 6 p.m. tip Monday.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (12-6, 9-5 South Atlantic Conference) will try to quickly wash the ill-taste of a three-point OT loss at Wingate Saturday with the middle game of a three-game road swing to Anderson (9-9, 6-8 SAC) for a 6 p.m. tip Monday.
"The Wingate game is over," Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson said. "With such a quick turnaround, any reflection done about Wingate happened on the bus ride back to Jefferson City. By the time we got to Sunday morning, the focus has been on our personal growth and Anderson."
Carson-Newman is angling for a second straight season sweep over the Trojans and a fourth straight win over Anderson. The Eagles used a dominant defensive effort to collect an 80-57 win over the Trojans on Dec. 4.
Crosby James entered the first meeting as the SAC's second-leading scorer averaging 20.3 points per game. He left Holt Fieldhouse with zero points. He was held scoreless for just the second time in his career and the first in a game in which he played more than 10 minutes.
James has put together five straight double-digit scoring efforts and has 20 points in two of his last five games. He is the SAC's fifth-leading scorer entering the contest.
Anderson is the only team in the South Atlantic Conference with three players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. While James ranks 5th with 17.1 points per game, Quin Nottingham and Parker Dortch follow in eighth and ninth, respectively with 15.5 and 15.3 points per game.
Dortch saw a five-game streak of double-digit scoring efforts come to a halt with four in a win over Limestone Saturday. However, he turned in 21, 30 and 24-point nights against Georgia College, Catawba and Limestone since New Year's Eve.
Since returning from an ailment against Mars Hill, Anderson is 2-0 with Nottingham back on the floor. Granted, Nottingham has been limited with 25 and 10 minutes his last two games. He has a pair of 30-point nights on the year against Georgia College and Queens.
Bryant Thomas comes into the contest with 103 career blocks. He is second all-time. Andy Tipton holds the school record (2004-09) with 109 career rejections - Thomas is six rejections away. If he were to do that against the Trojans, he would also match the single-game school record with six rejections. Thomas has three career six-block games.
Thomas is once again among the best in the nation at rejecting shots. He is 7th nationally with 36 blocks and 16th in the country with 2.19 re-directs per game. Thomas is the league leader in both categories.
Carson-Newman has the country's 15th best shot-blocking team with 74 total rejections. The Eagles lead the league for the category.
Tripp Davis is sixth in the country in total steals with 47 and ninth in steals per game with 2.73. Davis is six steals away from cracking the top 15 for steals in a single season (his own mark of 53 from last year). Davis has 138 steals for his career, He moved past Braun Dabbs with a six-steal day against Wingate and now has sole possession of sixth on the career steal chart. He needs 10 more to catch Andrew Johnson (2005-09) for fifth and his 148 steals.
Tipoff between the Eagles and Trojans is set for 6 p.m. Monday. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 5:45 with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on Mountain Sports 106.3 (WPFT-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
