INDIANAPOLIS – Riding a five-match win streak, including a 3-1 win over King (Tenn.) on Wednesday, the Carson-Newman men's soccer team (11-2-1) was ranked third in the initial NCAA Southeast region rankings, the NCAA announced on Wednesday.
The top six teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas, although no team can clinch an automatic qualifying bid via a tournament championship.
The Eagles have three wins over the seven other teams in the regions, including a 3-0 trouncing of top-ranked Young Harris last Tuesday. C-N is the highest ranked SAC team with Wingate and Lincoln Memorial also making an appearance.
Carson-Newman's last appearance in the NCAA Tournament occurred two years ago as the Eagles entered the tournament as the fifth-seed and made a run to the National Championship game before falling to Southern New Hampshire 2-1.
Young Harris is the top team in the Southeast at 10-2, while undefeated and the top team in the nation, Pfeiffer, is second at 13-0. The Peach Belt's Lander is fourth and the Bulldogs of Wingate are round out the top-five. Flagler is the sixth, while LMU and Clayton State are seventh and eighth, respectively.
Carson-Newman's next match is the final home contest of the regular season as the Eagles host Brevard at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night for Senior Night.
