JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's soccer head coach Stephen Lyons has announced his team's schedule for the upcoming 2024 season, a schedule that will have his team battle tested.
11 of the 16 matches will be against teams that finished above .500 last season including four games against NCAA Tournament teams in 2023.
"It's been tough getting into the Super Regional tournament," Lyons said. "The one guarantee is winning the conference tournament, that will always be the goal. To set ourselves up for a tough schedule puts us in the best position possible."
For the third time in the last four seasons, Lyons' crew will begin their season at home welcoming Trevecca Nazarene to Mossy Creek for the first time on Sept 5th. Carson-Newman won the only meeting in the series, a 7-0 win in Nashville on Sept 24th, 2014.
The next three games are all on the road. C-N will make trips to Young Harris and Montevallo on Sept 8th and 11th. It'll be the third consecutive season the Eagles face Young Harris, who went undefeated in conference play last season, while it will be just the third meeting all-time against Montevallo. The start of conference play wraps up the season's longest road stretch against Catawba on Sept 14.
The final four games of September are all at home and present challenges. Two Gulf South clubs visit in the same week as West Alabama and Auburn Montgomery return to Mossy Creek after finishing first and fourth, respectively in the GSC last season to close C-N's non-conference slate.
There are four occasions where C-N will have exactly one week off between conference matches, the first of which is at the end of September. Carson-Newman will play as host to Coker and Newberry on the final Saturdays of September to wrap up its longest home stretch of the season.
The rigorous schedule hits another level into conference play. Four of C-N's six conference games in October are against NCAA Tournament teams, getting two of those matches at home. It starts with road fixtures against Emory & Henry and Limestone and ends with three of the final four matches at home. Mars Hill, Lincoln Memorial and Wingate at home, and Lenoir-Rhyne away on the 19th.
"I feel like the league gets stronger every year," Lyons said. "I think last year from top to bottom it was the best it's ever been. We know what to expect coming in. There will not be any easy games or wins. We'll have to earn everything because we will have top competition every week."
The regular season concludes with conference road trips to Anderson and Tusculum on Nov 2nd and 6th.
"We tell the guys all the time to come ready into the preseason," Lyons said. "They have to come in fit so we can get straight to work on the field to get into the best position. We have a lot of returners so the spring was a good opportunity to put a lot in place as well."
All Carson-Newman home games will be available on the Eagle Sports Network with a subscription to FloSports.
