JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Carson-Newman head swim coach Ben Young has released the 2023-2024 swimming schedule, featuring four home meets on the season.
"I am really excited about our schedule this year as we take somewhat of a different approach to our season. While there are plenty of familiar teams and meets on our schedule, there are also a few new ones that should be interesting meets," Young said.
The Eagles will begin the season at home with the eighth annual Blue vs. Orange World Championships, a competitive and spirited intrasquad event. The event will take place in the Maddox Student Activities Center (MSAC) on Friday, Sep. 29 at 6:00 p.m. Prior to last year's championships, the blue and orange intrasquad teams were locked in a 3-3 series tie. However, the seventh annual Blue vs. Orange Championships saw the blue team take the lead in the series (4-3) with a 283-250 victory over orange.
C-N will begin the regular season against Emory & Henry on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:00 p.m. The meet will be held in the Emory & Henry Aquatics Center in Emory, Va. The Eagles raced the Wasps twice last season, taking home a victory in September (325-82) and December (327-74) of 2022.
The first true home meet of the season will be held Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. when the Eagles race Lees McRae. C-N will return home to Mossy Creek to host the Bobcats; last year's meeting between the teams resulted in a home victory for the Eagles.
On Friday, Oct. 27, the Eagles will head to Mars Hill to compete in another 6:00 p.m. match-up. The teams will swim in Harrell Pool in Mars Hill, N.C. Last season, C-N swim took home a victory against Mars Hill during Senior Night with a final team victory of 307-93.
The Eagles will head back to the Emory Fall Invitational for a two-day meet beginning on Friday, Nov. 3. The meet is at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga., and the first day of competition will begin at 6:00 p.m. The second day of the meet will begin Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11:00 a.m. C-N took home a second-place team finish from the invite last year with a few standout performances including a first-place finish in both the men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay.
After some weeks away from home, the Eagles will head back to the nest for a meet against Milligan. The second home meet of the season will take place Friday, Nov. 10 at 6:00 p.m. Last year's match-up with Milligan left the Eagles victorious with a final score of 177-88.
"U-Indy, our mid-season meet, will be a new experience for us as we travel up there to them as opposed to going to the UT Invite like we have in the past. I am anxious and excited to see where we are by that point in our season," Young said.
The weekend of Nov. 17 will be a long one as C-N travels to the University of Indianapolis for a three-day meet. Starting times for each day have yet to be determined. The Eagles will then return home to race against Emory & Henry on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11:00 a.m. and Mars Hill on Friday, Jan. 12 at 6:00 p.m. The home meet against Mars Hill will also be the Eagles' Senior Night.
C-N will head to Berry College to compete in a 6:00 p.m. meet on Friday, Jan. 26. The event will take place in Rome, Ga.
"Berry is another one that is new, but it should be a great opportunity for us to go down, race them, and then get up the next day to race Georgia Tech and ECU. We have really attempted to build our meet schedule around how we want to be training during that time of the year. That doesn't always pan out, but in this year's case, I think it's going to be a good one," Young said.
On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Eagles will race at Georgia Tech and East Carolina University. A group of both men and women's swimmers will race against Georgia Tech at 11:00 a.m. The meet will take place at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga. Last season's meet against the Division I school proved successful for the Eagles as many team members earned spots on the podium and set new personal records. Henrique Januario finished first in the men's 200-yard breaststroke with a finals time of 2:01.67, while Kyla Blakemore won gold in the women's 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.91.
Only the women's team will compete at East Carolina University. The meet will take place in Greenville, N.C. and begin at 11:00 a.m.
The split weekend is the final stop for the Eagles before the South Atlantic Conference Championships in Greensboro, N.C. The conference championships will begin Wednesday, Feb. 14 and go through Saturday, Feb. 17. The 2022-2023 season was the first year that the South Atlantic Conference sponsored swimming, and the Eagles took home silver from the first-ever SAC Swimming Championships. The men's and women's teams fell short only to Wingate and scored 1,496 and 1,666 points respectively. C-N left the championships with a number of first-place finishes and NCAA qualifying times. The Eagles continued forward with six individual selections for the 2023 NCAA DII Swimming and Diving Championships.
This year, the NCAA Championships will take place in Geneva, Ohio. The Eagles will race over five days beginning on Monday, Mar. 11. Last year's championships resulted in All-American status for multiple athletes, including two-time national champion Manon Compagner. Compagner took home gold in the women's 100-yard butterfly (52.45) and 100-yard freestyle (48.97). She became the first woman in the history of Carson-Newman's athletic department to lay claim to a national championship, and she tallied five All-American swims. Blakemore was another stand-out during nationals as she grabbed two individual All-American titles.
