Eagles Draw Railsplitters in SAC Quarterfinals
Carson-Newman Men’s Tennis draws its rival in the first round of the SAC Men’s Tennis Tournament.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Men's Tennis draws its rival in the first round of the SAC Men's Tennis Tournament.
Carson-Newman (10-7, 7-5 South Atlantic Conference) earned the six seed at the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament facing off against its rival, and three-seed Lincoln Memorial (21-5, 9-3 SAC) in the quarterfinals.
Carson-Newman faced off against the Railsplitters earlier this season falling in a 4-1 decision against a nationally-ranked LMU squad. The lone point in the regular season match in Harrogate came from the doubles point where the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead before the Splitters swept singles play through the clinching point.
Lincoln Memorial has been red hot recently only dropping a road contest to Limestone down the stretch. In fact, the loss to the Saints was the only time LMU has allowed more than two team points to a conference opponent, outside of the top two seeds at the conference tournament, Catawba and Wingate.
Alexandru Giurea and Radu Florea top the Splitters squad in singles with records of 14-2 and 14-3, respectively. In doubles, the Florea pairing with Ethan Hirons is 18-3 on the year. Carson-Newman only took one team point from LMU in the regular season meeting at the beginning of April. The Eagles clinched the doubles point behind a tiebreaker from Court No. 2 with the pairing of Marnix Van Dalen and Paul Gayk.
The winner of the contest between the Eagles and Railsplitters will advance to the SAC Semifinals where it will face the winner of the two/seven match of Wingate and Anderson. The Eagles lost to both the Bulldogs and Trojans in the regular season.
On the other side of the bracket, Catawba faces Tusculum in the one/eight matchup and Limestone faces Lenoir-Rhyne in the four/five.
The action begins on Wednesday, April 16 at 2 p.m. from the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. There will be an audio stream courtesy of the South Atlantic Conference available at RadioTennis.com.
