HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (1-1) women's basketball team picked up their first victory of the season with an 85-45 win over the Erskine Flying Fleet (0-2) in the SAC-Conference Carolinas Challenge at the Tex Turner Arena on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) led four Lady Eagles in double-digit scoring with 15 points, keyed by a 10 point performance off the bench in the first half.
"I thought we played with a lot of effort, our three-ball was going down and that allowed everything else to open up for us," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "It was just a really good effort by our basketball team tonight and it's amazing how it goes from one day to the other. It was nice to see some things go our way and be on the winning end for sure."
Markus and the Lady Eagles shot the bell well from three-point land, connecting on 45 percent of shots from beyond the arc. Markus and freshman Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) both had three to lead the Lady Eagles from three.
Markus was joined in double figures by: Burtstrom (11), Shyra Brown (12), and Jai Jai McLaughlin (11), and every Lady Eagle that played scored points and made at least one rebound for Carson-Newman. Brown with her 10 points and 12 rebounds collected the first double-double for Carson-Newman this season.
Carson-Newman finished the first half on a 12-2 run to lead at the break 38-21, with Markus leading all first-half scorers with 10 points.
The momentum from the end of the first half carried into the second period, with Carson-Newman shooting 46 percent from the field and the Lady Eagles were 6-11 from three in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Eagles outscored Erskine 47-24 in the second half, and Carson-Newman's largest lead would be 44 points with 1:21 left in the game.
Erskine shot 26 percent from the field in the game, and were led in scoring by Tara Potter's 11 points as the Flying Fleet dropped to 0-2 on the young season.
