Eagles fall to Wingate in conference home opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (0-2-1) dropped its first conference match 4-1 to Wingate (2-0-2) who was ranked no. 2 in the SAC preseason poll.
Senior Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, NC) scored for the Eagles. Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) took a free kick in Bulldog territory. The keeper blocked the shot and the ball was deflected to the feet of Munguia who put it in the back of the net. This was her first goal of the season.
Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) led Carson-Newman in shots with two taken and one on goal.
Wingate outshot the Eagles 15 to 7. Jade Montgomery scored two goals for Wingate. She was voted this preseason to the All-SAC first team. Her first goal was assisted by Brooke Howell while the second was unassisted from a rebounded block off the goalkeeper. Montgomery had five shots with three on goal.
Kaitlyn Brunworth scored the second goal for the Bulldogs assisted by Maggie Smith. Howell put the fourth goal on the board with an assist by Meaghan Barry.
The Eagles hit the road to continue conference play against Catawba on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
