JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Former Carson-Newman soccer All-American Helen Seed (Preston, England) has signed a professional contract as part of the Blackburn Rovers Ladies F.C.
The former Eagle defender returns to Rovers after seven years away which saw her make stops in the US, Switzerland, and Cyprus. She progressed through the youth ranks at Rovers before making her plea for the first team at only 17-years-old. Once on the first team, Seed made 24 appearances for Rovers before moving stateside and playing under both Richard Moodie and Simon Duffy at C-N.
"I'm really happy and really excited to be back at Rovers. It's nice to be back where it all started, and I owe Rovers a lot for my development in football," Seed said. "I'm looking forward to getting back into the Rovers swing of things."
After playing stateside for five years, Seed returned to England as she headed to Switzerland to play for FF Lugano 1976. In that time, she played UEFA Women's Champions League football against Manchester City in the round of 32. She then returned to England as part of Fylde for the first half of the 2020-21 season before heading to Cyprus to play for Apollon for the first four months this year.
In her career as an Eagle, Seed finished with the fourth-most minutes played in program history at 6,821. She started in 77 games for C-N which is third-best all-time. During the historic 2017 campaign, she tied a program record for single-season starts as she was part of the starting XI in 23 games that season, amassing a team-leading 2079 minutes. Throughout her four-year career in Mossy Creek, Seed saw a sleuth of individual honors bestowed upon her, including:
- 2017 D2CCA Second-Team All-America
- 2017 USC Third-Team All-America
- 2017 D2CCA First-team All-Region
- 2017 USC First-team All-Region
- 2017 CoSIDA Scholar First-team All-America
- 2017 SAC All-Tournament Team
- 2017 NCAA All-Tournament Team
- 2017 SAC First-Team
- 2016 All-SAC second-team
- 2016 SAC All-Tournament Team
"I think I can bring some experience to the field this season," Seed explained. "I've played for quite a few teams the last few seasons and experienced lots of different styles of play so I've picked up quite a few different things over the last few years which I think I can bring to the team.
Seed will be back in the blue-and-white for Rovers ahead of tomorrow's FA Women's Championship season opener against Bamber Bridge.
"I want to help the team improve on last season's results and help them push up the Championship table so that all the hard work we've been putting in over the last few weeks pays off."
Seed joins former midfielders Varin Ness (Italy), Christie Murray (England), Magda Mosengo (Europe), Holly Talbut-Smith (England), and Lauren Wade (Scotland), as well as defender Julie Nelson (England) among active Eagles playing professionally.
