Carson-Newman Women's Soccer Position Preview: Midfielders
Part two of a three-part series previewing the Carson-Newman women’s soccer team focuses on the Eagles midfielders.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- Part two of a three-part series previewing the Carson-Newman women's soccer team focuses on the Eagles midfielders.
C-N's top goal scorer in 2021 was midfielder Sydnee Duncan. In her first year with the Eagles, Duncan received All-SAC third-team honors for eight goals scored. She scored six of those eight goals in SAC play which ranked fourth overall. Duncan led the SAC with three game-winners in conference matches. Her 16 pts were tied for the team lead.
"I remember (Coach) Duffy saying, and it really stuck, that I just took risks and I just went up and the risk paid off most of the time," Duncan said. "Just getting there, being in front of goal and being clinical."
Duncan looks to build off her fantastic freshman season and play a key role once again this season. She is an All-SAC preseason second team pick.
Joining Duncan as the only other returning piece in the midfield is junior Savannah Fields. She competed in 17 matches and made 13 starts. Fields enters her third season with C-N having scored three career goals and assisting on two.
Four new freshmen midfielders strive to compete for playing time amongst the midfielders, Felicia Frick, Maja Bengtsson, Selina Jud and Molly Zander.
Frick comes to Mossy Creek from Eschen, Liechtenstein, where she went to Liechtensteinisches Gymnasium Vaduz high school.
Bengtsson comes over from Malung, Sweden. She attended Stjerneskolan high school.
Jud is from Wilderswil, Switzerland and went to Gymnasium Interlaken.
Zander joins her older sister Abbie, as a member of the women's soccer team. She attended Jefferson County high school and is the third Zander to play on the women's soccer team here at Carson-Newman. Her oldest sister Kate played with the Eagles for the past two seasons.
"Every single one of our freshmen coming in are honestly doing big things," Duncan said. "I think they are all making a really big difference."
These midfielders will play a vital role in elevating C-N's offense in 2022.
The final part of the position previews will attack the defenders and goalkeepers with senior Jente Kuper scheduled to be released on Monday. Carson-Newman opens the season on Aug, 25 in Cleveland, Tenn. when it takes on Cedarville.
