JEFFERSON CITY, TN – Senior Mary Northcutt (Huntsville, Ala.) of the Carson-Newman swim team was honored as the female swimmer of the week by the Bluegrass Mountain Conference for the week of Nov.11 to Nov.17, 2019.
The award was bestowed upon Northcutt after she took first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.06 on the second day of the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia.
"The 50 is definitely a big mental race," Northcutt said. "I always smile when get on the block because I know I'm going to have a good time."
Despite the first-place finish Northcutt still aims to improve upon her time.
"My goal was to break 24 for the first time in a dual meet, which I didn't, I was 24.0" Northcutt said. "But I think I executed a really good race and I'm pretty happy with the result."
This is the second time Northcutt has been honored just this season alone as she received the same award for the week of Sept. 30 to Oct. 6.
"It feels good, it's just kind of a label stuck on a good season," Northcutt said. "Like I said last time I've just got to get back in the pool and train hard again."
Northcutt, like every member of the swim team, will continue to try and improve her race times throughout the season. The more the Eagles improve upon their finishes, the better their national ranking will be.
The women are currently 18th in the nation while the men are ranked 19th overall.
"There's a lot of little things that I have to tune up," Northcutt said. "Even the fifty before this meet we decided to implement a straight arm freestyle which I'd never done before and there's still a lot of work with that so the next couple of weeks we'll be tuning up."
Northcutt and the rest of the Eagles will next suit up in a dual-meet against Lees-McRae College at home in Jefferson City, Tennessee on Nov.16.
