JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Day one of the 2018 ETSU Invitational & Knoxville Youth Atletics HS Indoor Classic brought forth season-best times and school records for C-N athletes who competed against Division 1 and Olympic talent at the David E. Walker Indoor site.
In the 60-meter dash, freshman football wide receiver Devon Moore turned in a time of 6.92 seconds checking in at seventh overall out of 103 athletes. Despite the impressive time in his first event of the indoor track season, Moore collected a second-place finish in the heat as Coastal Carolina's Kahlim Denmark recorded a time of 6.89 seconds, however, Moore topped former Western Carolina standout and Olympic silver medalist Manteo Mitchell by .01 seconds and will compete in the events' finals tomorrow afternoon.
Savion Smith tied for 34th overall at 7.11 seconds topping his previous time of 7.19 at the Bast-Cregger Invitational.
"It was a great day today overall," Coach David Needs stated. "To be able to go out there after a long break against some tough compeition and you're able to put on a performance is fantastic. It's great for Devon Moore to beat out Mitchell and go to his first 60-meter final."
Sophomore Caleb Agee was also a standout for the Eagles in the 400-meter prelims as he finished with a time of 50.85, which was good for 13th overall out of 91 runners. The Virginia native collected a first place finish in his heat beating out athletes from Montreat, VMI, Campbell, Guilford and Queens.
Junior Jahvad McDermott claimed the No. 3 spot in the triple jump with a mark of 14.69 meters, finishing behind two jumpers from FCS school Western Carolina. Kristofer Potts-Howard also sat inside the top-10 at No. 7 with a distance of 13.88 meters.
After breaking the school record in the 60-meter dash on Dec. 2 at the Bast-Cregger Invitational with a time of 7.98 seconds, freshman Tia Davis topped her own record in the 60-meter prelims this afternoon with a time of 7.96 seconds. Trailing to Western Carolina's Jazmine Gooden (7.62 seconds) in the heat, Davis beat out Catamounts freshman Erin Willard and ETSU's senior sprinter Jazmin Lacy.
The Ooltewah, Tenn. native yet again broke her own record in the 200-meter prelims with a time of 26.32, previously etching her name in the C-N record book in December when she recorded a time of 26.53 seconds.
Freshman teammate Amanda Lowe also collected a second-place finish in her heat with a time of 8.02, topping her previous season-best set at the Bast-Cregger Invitational at 8.18 seconds. Cierra Henderson rounded out the trio of freshman sprinters in the event collecting a time of 8.06 seconds which was also better than her previous high of 8.11 seconds. She claimed a third-place finish in the heat and 26th overall.
The finals for the 60-meter dash are set for Saturday at 3:20 p.m.
Senior Samantha Gudger claimed the No. 4 spot in the high jump topping the height of 1.63 meters she set at the Bast-Cregger Invitational, clearing 1.65 meters on her third attempt. Gudger returns to action this year for the Eagles after missing all of last season with an injury.
"McDermott was great in his first meet with us and it was great to have Samantha back," Needs added. "You notice some things with a lot of the others where they might not have finished at the top, but they did some things really well in which they can learn and use it as building blocks moving forward. Kathie O'Neill ran well for us and so did Amanda Lowe who set a personal best."
