JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman women's and men's cross country teams will compete this Saturday in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship in Wingate, N.C. The men's race will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's race at 10:30 a.m.
The regional championships will feature squads from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas.
The men's team will look to have a strong finish in the regional championship. In their last contest, the Eagles finished 6th in the South Atlantic Conference Championship.
Sophomore Jonathan Madden (Franklin, Tenn.), freshman Chris Cowan-Banker (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Jordan Backus (Roanoke, Va.) are key runners to keep an eye out for in the contest.
Led by senior Aubrey Morris (Chattanooga, Tenn.), the Lady Eagles look to contend for a top finish in the championship. The women's team most recently finished 3rd in the SAC Championship.
Morris comes into the regional championship after winning SAC Runner of the Year honors for the second straight year. She has captured five individual titles this season and is the highest individual finisher returning from the 2007 Southeast Regional.
Other Lady Eagle runners to keep an eye out for in the contest include junior Tiffany Winchell (White Pine, Tenn.), sophomore Catelyn Dake (Knoxville, Tenn.), junior Cara Hawkins (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and senior Laura Young (Cheltenham, Pa.).
The top two teams and the top five individuals in both races will earn a berth to compete against qualifiers from the other seven regions in the NCAA Division II National Championship. The national championship will be held November 22, at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.
