This marks the first time since 2021-22 that Carson-Newman and Newberry have played twice in the same season. Carson-Newman is looking for its first sweep in the season series since the 2018-19 campaign.
The Eagles won 83-82 in the first meeting. The Wolves made 11-of-34 threes that day both attempts and makes were season highs.
Newberry has the second-best scoring defense in the South Atlantic Conference. The Wolves have given up 80 or more points in just five games this season.
The Wolves defend the three-point line well, and had only surrendered double-digit threes to foes on two occasions (10 for Alaska Anchorage and Emory & Henry) prior to Carson-Newman's meeting with the Wolves on Jan. 11. The Eagles went 14-of-26 from long range. The Wolves have given up double-digit threes three more times since then. However, over the Wolves' last three games, no one has made more than seven threes against them.
This will be Marcus Kirkland's second career game as a head coach in Holt Fieldhouse. Brian Good's top assistant for more than a decade at Wingate, Kirkland led the Bulldogs on Jan. 26, 2019 as Good stayed home with the flu. He guided the Bulldogs to a 76-74 win over C-N thanks to an Emarius Logan game-winning jumper.
John Zhao is the ninth member of Carson-Newman's 200-three club. Nick Brenegan joined the club earlier this season. Brenegan has 256 career threes, three away from Malik Abraham and Charles Clark, who are tied for second with 259 career triples. With 224 career threes, Zhao passed assistant coach Luke Brenegan and is officially fifth all-time in threes made.
Zhao, Brenegan and Jack Browder are see-sawing around the all-time leading scoring list. Zhao has 1,324 career points Brenegan 1,217 and Browder 1,186. Zhao is oficially in the top 25 all-time in school history in scoring. He needs 44 points to draw even with Mike Morton to enter the top-20 all-time. Brenegan is 31 points away from the top 30, which is occupied by Carson Brooks (1,248 career points). Meanwhile, Jack Browder trails Jim Shuler for 32nd place and his 1,197 points, he needs 11 points to catch him and 14 to become the third Eagle this season to join the 1,200-point club.
Carson-Newman senior guard Trey Hubbard tallied his 1,000th career point as a college basketball player. He has 819 career points in his time in a C-N jersey. He joins the likes of Shaun Jones and Grant Teichmann as all-conference players who scored 1,000 career points split between C-N and another institution.
