ROCK HILL, S.C. – Asger Hartvig was named South Atlantic Conference Men's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year in an announcement from the league office Thursday afternoon.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the conference's championship sports and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
"Another incredible award for an incredible athlete," said head coach Ben Young. "I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but if Asger would stop winning awards, then I wouldn't have to keep saying what a fantastic job he has done throughout his career here at C-N."
Asger Hartvig has racked up his fair share of academic accolades throughout his time with C-N swim. In the 2024-25 season alone, Hartvig was named NCAA Elite 90 and SAC Elite 23 winner due to his commitment to academic excellence in the classroom. Hartvig became the second Eagle to earn this honor in school history across all athletic programs. Hartvig currently holds a 4.000 GPA in Mathematics and was the winner of the South Atlantic Conference 2025 Elite 23 award. Since the award's creation in 2008, Carson-Newman's sole recipient of the Elite 90 was swimmer Nancy Claire Smith in 2015.
"Academics are a massive focus of his, and he has held his standard high for not only himself but the program as a whole," said Young. "Again, a perfect example of what it means to develop as a swimmer in the pool and as a student in the classroom."
The 2024-25 season saw Hartvig put together a standout performance in the pool. The Denmark native has earned multiple invitations to the NCAA National Championships throughout his four-year stint at C-N. At the 2025 SAC Championships, Hartvig racked up multiple medals: two gold, two silver, and one bronze. He also set a new school record in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 53.63.
In his time in the Carson-Newman swimming program, Hartvig has been a two-time individual nationals qualifier, a four-year national team member, a two-year team captain, and a four-time record holder. Following this season's NCAA National Championships, the CSCAA named Hartvig second-team All-American in the 100-Breaststroke, 200-Medley Relay, and 400-Medley Relay. In the pool, Hartvig earned an individual invitation to the NCAA National Championships in the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke, and 200 IM events. At the SAC Championships, Hartvig set a program record in the 100 Breaststroke with a gold medal time of 53.60. Hartvig also served as team captain for his second year with the program.
