JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Braelyn Wykle dropped a career-high 36 points ass Carson-Newman led by as many as 30 points to get back into the win column with an 86-58 dismantling of UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday evening at Holt Fieldhouse.
Wykle tallied the fifth 30-point scoring effort of her career finishing the game with 36 points, five steals, five rebounds and three assists going 12-for-21 from the field, 5-for-9 from three-point range and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. The scoring outburst was the eighth-most points scored by a Division II player this year and second-most by a SAC player.
"We had a lot of steals in the backcourt so I feel like I had a lot of easy layups," Wykle said. "I started off strong with my threes so the points add up. It gives me a lot of confidence. I really hadn't been shooting well so that gives me a lot of confidence moving forward."
On a night where the team shot 41 percent from the field, Carson-Newman (10-3, 8-2) feasted off of 27 UVA Wise (3-10, 3-8) turnovers posting 31 points off of giveaways adding 46 points in the paint. The Lady Eagles improve to 7-0 all-time against the Cavaliers winning by double figures for the sixth time.
"We got off to a really good start," Carson-Newman coach Mike Mincey said. "The first group was playing really well defensively. I really felt like Abby [Wilson] and Makayla [Alvey] gave us good energy. They have good foot speed and are very active defensively. I thought Syndey [Pearce] played well. Today was Harli [Smith's] first game back. I thought she did well and gave us some moments. I think the depth is probably what got us the win because we were able to go to the press."

The rest of the unit filled up the stats with Addison Byrd (Nashville, Tenn.) leading the team with nine boards, Skylar Boshears (Lafollette, Tenn.) dishing out five assists and Sydney Pearce (Johnson City, Tenn.) posting six points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Wise pierced the scoring column first before the Lady Eagles rattled off a 16-2 run, the last 10 coming unanswered to build a 16-4 advantage with 5:25 to go at first half. Wise began a run at the tail end of the first pulling within seven at 25-18 through 10 minutes.
Spanning the quarter break, the Cavaliers used a 10-2 burst to trim the margin to 25-21. After a 7-0 C-N run, the visitors used an 8-0 spurt to close the margin to 32-29 with 5:10 to play before halftime. Mincey's group closed the first half strong with 10 unanswered points to open up a 46-31 lead at the break. The Cavs turned the ball over 11 times in the period including eight times in the final 3:24 leading to 14 Lady Eagles points.
Carson-Newman missed 10 of its first 12 shots from the field in the third but Wise could only close the gap to eight at 50-42 with 5:31 to play in the frame. The Orange and Blue closed the quarter with nine straight and 14 of 16 to open up a 66-46 bulge.
In the final period, the Lady Eagles used a 7-0 flourish to build up the 86-56 differential limiting the visitors to 31 percent shooting from the field over the final 10 minutes.
Wise sees its losing streak hit six games, the longest active skid in the conference. Meg Crawford racked up a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds making five of seven from deep.
Caitlyn Ross led the team in scoring with 17 points adding four assists and three steals. Nia Vanzant, the league's fourth leading scorer, was held under her average with 15 points going 7-for-17 from the field adding four steals and four rebounds.
The Lady Eagles begin a three-game road trip starting on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Anderson, a unit that C-N beat by two overcoming a 12-point deficit on Dec. 4. Broadcast coverage airs on the Eagle Sports Network 15 minutes before tip with "The AEC Countdown to Tip-Off".
