JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (15-6, 12-5 SAC) will try to get back in the win column when it welcomes Mars Hill (13-8, 10-7 SAC) to Holt Fieldhouse for a South Atlantic Conference contest tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m.
After scoring a season-low 58 points against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, C-N will aim to get back in the win column and split the season series with Mars Hill. The Lady Eagles lost the first matchup with the Lions, suffering a loss 71-62, exactly two weeks ago. The game was decided in the fourth quarter, where MHU outscored C-N 22-12 to win by nine.
Thankfully for Carson-Newman, it gets to play in Holt Fieldhouse where it has been exceptional this season. Mincey's team at home averages 91.0 points per contest while shooting 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range. All those numbers are well above the averages for the season. The Lady Eagles have won three consecutive games at home and are 8-1 this season.
Lindsey Taylor (Maryville, Tenn.) and Campbell Penland (Sevierville, Tenn.) continue to climb the record books with C-N. Taylor is fourth all-time in scoring and eighth all-time in rebounding. She is 23 rebounds away from passing Zoriah Williams for seventh in rebounding all-time. Penland is currently tied with her former teammate Addison Byrd for 15th on the scoring list. The senior guard can get to 13th on the scoring list with her next 20 points scored.
The Lady Eagles rank in the top 15 nationally in six different categories. C-N's 19.6 assists per game is number one, while its 1.23 assist to turnover ratio is eleventh-best. The skillful passing has led to the eighth-best scoring offense getting 81.4 points per game and to shoot 45.3 percent from the field, ranking 15th nationally. They have got it done on the defensive end of the floor as well, ranking 10th nationally averaging 4.6 blocks per game and winning the turnover margin by five per game.
Carson-Newman leads the all-time series with Mars Hill 59-21 and has won 12 consecutive games at Holt Fieldhouse in this series. The last seven wins at home in this series have been by 30 points or more.
Mars Hill has lost back-to-back games since the first meeting between these two squads. MHU went to Lincoln Memorial last Wednesday and lost 92-69. Last time out, it suffered a close loss to #12 Coker 62-58. At no point this season have the Lions lost more than two games in a row.
While the Lions are five games above .500, they have struggled on the road. Emry Tsitouris' team is 3-6 away from home but has won two of their last three road games this season.
Aaliyah El is the third highest scorer in the South Atlantic Conference this season, averaging 16.7 points per game. C-N defended her well in the first meeting, holding her to just 10 points on three of eight shooting. Tateyoina Harris and Maddie Gillie both average double-figures in scoring as well.
MHU is best in the SAC at getting to the free throw line and capitalizing while there. It averages more than 23 attempts per game and makes 16 on average. The Lions also have the second-highest rebounding margin per game in the league and won the rebounding battle in the first meeting with C-N 38-33.
Tipoff between the Lady Eagles and Lions is set for 5:30 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins at 5:15 with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on MIX 105.5 (WSEV-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
