Futrell gains first SAC Player of the Week honors
Following her two-brace week against Tusculum, senior Emilee Futrell (Wilson, N.C.) has been named South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Following her two-brace week against Tusculum, senior Emilee Futrell (Wilson, N.C.) has been named South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league Wednesday morning.
This is the first time an Eagle has landed the honor since earlier this month when senior Lira Mathes (Knoxville, Tenn.) was named SAC Offensive Player of the Week on March 10. This is Futrell's first SAC Offensive Player of the Week honor of her Eagles career during her four years at Carson-Newman.
As she has been during her four years in Mossy Creek, Futrell has been a consistent offensive threat in 2021. She currently sits with the third-most shot attempts in the SAC with 23, is tied for fourth for goals as she has collected four so far, and is tied for fourth-most points in the SAC with nine compiled through C-N's five games this season.
Last week, Futrell and the Eagles squared off with the Tusculum Pioneers twice in the matter of four days. On Thursday within the confines of McCown Field, Futrell was the pinnacle difference maker as she pushed across the game-winner in the 99th minute after a beautiful assist from senior teammate Kristina Markfort (Munster, Germany). With the game-winner, Futrell now holds sole possession of eighth place in C-N Women's Soccer history for career goals, only three behind former assistant coach Julianne Herrity who had 34 during her career. This was her second on the day after getting the scoring started for C-N with an easy one-timer in the 16th minute as she made a Pioneer defender and the goalkeeper miss before Futrell set up right in front of goal to put C-N ahead.

Earlier last week, the same effort was seen by Futrell as she got C-N on the board from Pioneer Field with a finish in the 7th minute of action after the team set her up beautifully. Then, in the 63rd minute, Futrell gathered the first of two braces on the week when she finished another timely assist and gave C-N a 4-0 lead at the time.
Futrell and the Eagles will look to rebound after rattling off 19 shots against LMU but falling to the Railsplitters 2-1 on Tuesday. The Eagles will finish the regular season with a road matchup with the Mars Hill Lions on Thursday from Mars Hill, N.C. That match is slated for a first kick from Mars Hill at 5:00 p.m.
