ROCK HILL, S.C. – After a career weekend leading Carson-Newman a series split with seventh-ranked Catawba, sophomore Harrison Travis was named the South Atlantic Conference's Player of the Week on Tuesday for his efforts at the plate.
This is the second weekly award by an Eagle in 2021 with Matt Bradley (Talbott, Tenn.) earning the opening SAC Pitcher of the Week award on Feb. 9, 2021. Travis is the first hitting to win a weekly laurel since Tyler Thompson (Gallatin, Tenn.) picked up the plaudit on April 22, 2019.
In the first 17 games of his career, the Soddy Daisy, Tenn. native had seven hits and two RBIs with zero multi-hit or multi-RBI efforts. He exploded in a four-game series against the Indians going 7-for-14 at the plate with the first two homers of his career, seven RBIs and four runs scored. The right-handed hitter tallied three, two-hit days and a pair of multi-RBI outings driving in a run in each game.
The four-game set got off to a great start with the Eagles winning 10-6 behind a 2-for-4 day, a two-run dinger in the fifth and a pair of runs scored. In the nightcap, Travis added a 2-for-3 effort with a double, RBI and run scored.
On Sunday, the sophomore belted a three-run homer to left field to cap a seven-run fifth inning for Carson-Newman paving the way for a 9-5 win in game three of slate. To close out the opening series of SAC play, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Among SAC hitters, Travis ranks in the top 15 in batting average (.370), home runs (2) and slugging percentage (.630). He is riding a career-best five-game hitting streak going 8-for-18 (.444) with two homers, seven RBIs and five runs scored.
Six of his 10 hits this year have come with two outs where he is hitting .500. Travis has feasted against left-handed pitching going 5-for-11 at the plate and hitting .385 when runners are on base.
The Eagles are slated to host a SAC series for the first time in 2021 this weekend with a four-game series against UVA Wise. Broadcast coverage airs on the Eagle Sports Network in audio and video formats available on cneagles.com/live.
