Eagle begin road swing at Young Harris and King

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – After a 13-game home stand, Carson-Newman prepares for its long road swing of the year starting a six-game trip on Tuesday at Young Harris at 1 p.m. before playing King on Wednesday in Bristol, Tenn. at 2 p.m.
Sporting a flawless 5-0 road record, the Eagles have rattled off wins in six straight road affairs since losing 5-4 at Coker on April 18, 2021. It is the longest road winning streak in a single year since winning five from April 9-24, 2019, with wins at Anderson, King and a sweep of Tusculum. The last time the unit won seven successive games came in 2011 from March 11 to April with sweeps of Brevard, Mars Hill and a win at Wingate.
In this year's road games, Carson-Newman (11-10) is averaging over 10 runs per game with 16 extra-base hits in five outings swiping a dozen bases. On the bump, the staff has a 5.86 ERA striking out 39 batters in 43 innings.
The Eagles are seeking their first ever win over the Mountain Lions as Young Harris (13-5) has won each of the first four games including a pair in 2019 most recently a 10-4 decision at Mossy Creek on March 27.
Young Harris has rattled off five straight wins improving to 13-5 on the year. The Mountain Lions have been almost unbeatable on the road at 7-1 but are 6-4 in home outings. The club swept its Peach Belt opening series against Georgia College. The team's last loss came on Feb. 26 falling 8-0 in game two against West Alabama.
The Purple and Silver have been steady on the rubber limiting foes to a .250 batting average against giving up five or fewer runs 12 times through 18 games winning each one of those affairs. A big reason is that the hurlers have walked three or fewer batters on 13 occasions.
At the plate, Ethan Underwood and Noah Fitzgerald have each hit three homers and driven in 17 runs. However the club is hitting .279 overall scoring six or fewer runs 10 times. Perhaps the biggest knock on the club is the 40 errors committed but the team has turned 40 double plays.
After beating King 11-0 on Feb. 15, the Eagles are aiming to make it back-to-back wins over the Tornado in the 32nd meeting. C-N leads the series 21-10 and have won nine of the first 12 contests played in Bristol.
Four Carson-Newman hitters fanned a dozen batters and seven Eagles drove in runs as coach Tom Griffin's group recorded its second shutout of the year in the first meeting in 2022. Matt Coles (Winter Garden, Fla.) fired his second quality start of the year to improve to 2-0 on the season scattering four hits and a walk over six innings with five strikeouts.
Carson-Newman recorded a shutout over King for the second time in the history of the series with the last coming in 1990, also an 11-0 win. The Eagles scored at least one run in six of the eight trips to the dish.
Since the loss to the Eagles, King (9-4) has won six of its last eight games including each of its last three after sweeping Southern Wesleyan over the weekend. The game at Mossy Creek is the only time the unit has played a road game as 20 of the team's first 22 affairs of the year are at home.
Jarrett Backus has hit safely in six straight games and went 5-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs in the finale on Saturday against Southern Wesleyan. It has lifted his average to .425 on the year. Robbie Scott is the team's leading run producer with 17 while hitting .452.
