JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Orange Crush scored on three 60+ yard drives and used quality defensive play late to cruise to a 20-9 win over the Blue Waves in Carson-Newman football's annual spring game Saturday at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
"For spring ball, we were efficient and didn't turn the ball over," head coach Ashley Ingram said. "We had some good drives. Everyone got reps in a game that went by pretty quick because we were playing 10-minute quarters. We've made a lot of progress and that's in part because we haven't had a ton of injuries through our 13 practice periods."
The contest featured some modifications. The game featured 10-minute periods and guaranteed 40-yard punts on possession changes. Furthermore, there was a separate group of white-jerseyed players made up of offensive linemen, A-backs and specialists who played for both teams.
The Orange team got touchdowns of 22 yards from Joshua Adams, an 18-yard pitch and catch to Jaden Jones and a one-yard touchdown plunge from James Maddox.
The Blue team's points came from a Travis Arrington 36-yard field goal and a one-yard touchdown run from Gavin Gosnell.
Ingram singled out the performances of Adams and Jones, especially.
"Both are really talented and capable of playing for us last year," Ingram said. "We made a conscious effort to redshirt our recruiting class last year, and we thought that was a great recruiting class. Both Josh and Jaden could have played last year. Those guys showed up today, but they've been showing up in practice all spring. Rico Shoats and Trey Gunnings have been in there as well. We have a great young team and are set up to do well."
Both Orange and Blue teams played turnover free over the course of the 90-minute scrimmage.
"We have made a little progress from the spring last year," Ingram said. "We just keep building, we laid the foundation last spring, we continue to build on it this spring."
Carson-Newman has two spring practices remaining before beginning offseason conditioning work.
