SLAMMER AND SQUIRE, Fla. – Carson-Newman got a balanced team effort from its women's golf team en route to a third place finish at the end of round one of the Flagler-hosted World Golf Invite Sunday afternoon.
Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) and Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) both fired 77s (+5) to pace the Eagles. The duo is tied for 13th.
Lynn, the number one team in the nation and defending national champs, leads the pack with a 294. Sixth-ranked St. Leo is in second with a 310. The Eagles, as well as Columbus State and West Georgia are even at 314.
"We have performed well again," head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "I would give us a B+. We are poised for a couple of low rounds if the girls stop over thinking and just play."
The Eagles are in front of no. 16 Cameron (t-6th), no. 11 Flagler (t-6th), no. 21 UNC-Pembroke (8th).
Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Kelli Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) both shot 80s (+8) to round out C-N's scorers. They are tied for 26th. Mary Tunnell (Cordova, Tenn.) rounded things out with an 81 (+9), and is tied for 33rd.
"Our goal stays the same as last week, make a decision, commit to it and execute. We are still allowing fear & doubt to creep into our shots," Strudwick said. "I know we are close though. Danielle was just +1 coming into 16 but shot +4 on the closing 3 holes not fully executing or trusting herself. Lesson learned for her today. Overall I'm pleased we are right there for good finish tomorrow."
The Eagles resume play Monday in a grouping with the defending national champion Fighting Knights.
