SAVANNAH, Ga. – Carson-Newman's women's golf team wrapped up a frustrating first round at the Armstrong Pirate Women's Invitational in 10th place out of 16 teams.
Head women's golf coach Suzanne Strudwick said windy conditions at the Greg Norman-designed course made things challenging for the Eagles.
"It was a tough day for scoring," Strudwick said. "The wind was blustery which made the tee shots intimidating. The course has lots of water holes and well placed bunkers. Our team must do a better job of executing and not being fearful over a challenging shot."
That's not to say the level of competitor isn't challenging either. The top five spots are occupied by teams ranked in the top 25 of the WGCA poll. Flagler and host Armstrong Atlantic are tied for first. Carson-Newman, which shot a 335 for the opening round, is 13 strokes out of the top five. Grand Valley State sits in fifth with a 322.
Kelli Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the charge for the Eagles with an 81 (+9). She sits in a tie for 26th. Danielle Baiunco (Melbourne, Fla.) is a stroke back of her in a tie for 30th.
Mary Tunnell was plus four after the front nine, but dropped nine more strokes on the back nine to finish at 85 (+13) for the day and in a tie for 45th,
Lauren Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) had the best moment of the day for the Eagles, according to Strudwick. Hodge eagled hole 11 after reaching the green in two and nailing a 10-foot putt. However, she shot an 87 and wound up in a tie for 57th.
The Eagles wrap up the APWI Tuesday morning.
