JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's tennis team opened up its 2015 regular season with a 7-2 loss to Young Harris.
The Eagles managed to score their only two points of the match in doubles play as Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Düsseldorf, Germany) teamed up to defeat a Young Harris duo to the score of 8-6. Patricia Guerreiro (Portugal) and Jennifer Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) also combined for an 8-4 victory.
"That's the one thing (doubles) we have been focusing on, coming out with good intensity and energy, "coach Jean Love said. "We did that today."
Carson-Newman's singles games never managed to gain any overall points despite many close sets. Guerreiro won her first game 6-1 before falling 1-6 and 10-6 in the remaining two. Corsato-Owsianka was also competitive throughout but ended with a 7-5 and 6-4 defeat.
"There were a couple of matches that were well within our grasps," Love said of her singles. "We just have to do a few things better, and overall, we have to cut down on unforced errors by playing smarter."
The Eagles, eyeing a victory, will return home on next Friday to take on the University of the Cumberlands.
