JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's tennis team (5-9, 3-7 SAC) will have a chance to gain some significant ground in the South Atlantic Conference standings late in the season when its faces off against two conference foes this weekend.
"We will five it our all to finish strong this weekend," coach Jean Love said of her club. "It's a big weekend for us.
The Eagles will welcome Lincoln Memorial (5-8, 3-7 SAC) to the Carson-Newman Tennis Courts on Friday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day travel on Saturday to Lenior-Rhyne (9-11, 4-5 SAC) for a 2 p.m. match. The contests this weekend will feature the seventh, eighth and ninth placed teams in the SAC standings.
Each team will need a win to improve their chances for making the SAC Tournament that is just two weeks away.
Carson-Newman will travel to North Carolina for a showdown with Lenior-Rhyne on Saturday. The Bears, who are currently seventh in the SAC standings, will look to hold off a hungry Eagle club who are desperate for another win. Dominique Bruce will lead for her club as she boasts a 10-8 singles record on the season. She will then join forces with Zorica Djvric in search for their sixth doubles victory on the year.
Lincoln Memorial, who is coming off a 5-4 loss to Queens on Wednesday, will travel to Jefferson City on Sunday and try to continue the Eagle's losing skid. Elena Vassllyeva will lead the way for the Railsplitters with an impressive 10-2 singles record on the year. She will also team up with Gemma Goodland in hopes to retrieve their 10th double victory on the season. Lincoln Memorial will look to defeat the Eagles for the second straight year, as they came out on top of a 6-3 advantage late in last year's play.
"Still with a shot at the conference tournament despite all the injuries, the players have done a good job of hanging in there," Love said. "We will give it all we got."
The Eagles must be consistent in singles play, especially at the bottom of the order to be successful this weekend. Carson-Newman's No. 4- 6 players have gone 24-28 so far this season. Look for Carson-Newman to improve on this statistic and help contribute to a 25-23 overall record in doubles.
