De Sousa named SAC Varsity Gems Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Sade De Sousa was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for her performance during the third week of the outdoor season.
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Sade De Sousa was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for her performance during the third week of the outdoor season.
De Sousa is a junior sprinter for the Eagles from Windholeck, Khonas, Namibia. She competed in Austin, Texas at the Texas Relays this past weekend and placed fourth in the women's 100-meter dash timed section. De Sousa's 11.48-second performance broke the Carson-Newman program record in the event.
This is De Sousa's third SAC Varsity Gems Athlete of the Week award of her junior season with the Eagles. Her first honor was the SAC Varsity Gems Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week after a record-breaking performance at the VMI Invitational Jan. 13-14. De Sousa placed second in the women's 200-meter race on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a time of 25.05. She then grabbed gold in the women's 60-meter race with a new personal record of 7.41 seconds in the event. Along with her first-place finish, De Sousa also broke the Namibian senior women's 60-meter record in her home country for the second time in two months after breaking it during the Bast-Cregger Invitational in early December.
De Sousa then placed first in the women's 60-meter dash in 7.44 seconds on Saturday, Jan. 28 at the VMI Winter Classic to snag her second SAC Varsity Gems award of the indoor season. De Sousa's performance resulted in a provisional qualifying time in the event.
De Sousa and the rest of the Eagle crew will be back in action Friday, Apr. 7 for a split weekend at the Flames Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn. and Tennessee Invite in Knoxville, Tenn.
