LEXINGTON, Va. – Carson-Newman's indoor track and field season began with strong results on both the men's and women's sides at the VMI Team Challenge hosted by Virginia Military Institute.
The meet at VMI is the first of three consecutive visits to the home of the Keydets over the next month.
On the men's side, only two field events were competed in by Eagle athletes. Keaton Gramann placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.94m, short of the winning mark of just over seven meters from VMI's Zachary Denton.
In the weight throw, Ian Salyer found bronze on the podium, which had a distance of 13.8m. Salyer was the only athlete not from the hosting Keydets to place in the event's top six.
On the women's side, Carson-Newman swept the podium in the long jump, with Sydney McCarty, Brooke Taylor, and Brooke Visser taking first through third, respectively, with distances of 5.50m, 5.49m, and 5.21m.
C-N shined in another jumps event, the triple jump, as Brooke Taylor took home first place with a distance of 11.34m. Kendall Whitehead placed third, finding a distance of 10.93m. Sydney McCarty and Brooke Visser placed seventh and ninth in the event, respectively, with distances of 10.34m and 9.97m.

In the final jumps event on the women's side, Kendall Whitehead placed third with a mark of 1.50m, and Kellie Ivens and Eliza Collins placed fifth and sixth with heights of 1.45 and 1.40m.
In the lone throwing event, Carson-Newman competed in Lizzy Hall and placed eighth in the shot put with a distance of 10.15m.
The Eagles only competed in one track event: the 60-meter hurdles. Ava Clark and Kellie Ivens finished third and fourth, with times of 10.52 and 10.64, respectively.
