SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's golfer Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) had one three under par rounds on the opening day of the Food Lions South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championship.
The first team all-SAC performer tied for second with a 71 (-1). Carson-Newman is tied with Lenoir-Rhyne for fourth after a team 309 on the par 72, 7,054-yard River Course at the Sevierville Golf Club.
LMU has the day one team and individual lead. The Railsplitters' Connor Froning obliterated the course on day one shooting and eight-under 64. That mark ties the best mark shot in SAC tournament history and is a stroke away from the all-time record for low round in the SAC. Froning also set a course record with the tally.
He's seven strokes ahead of Kim-Moss. Kim-Moss made one of five Eagles across all competitors for the men's round. He was remarkably consistent, paring 14 holes.
Rafael Jackson (Rutledge, Tenn.) followed Kim-Moss in the standings in a tie for 16th after a five-over 77.
Chase McCown (Sevierville, Tenn.) – playing on his home course – used the familiarity to his advantage to finish in the middle of the pack in a tie for 25th following a seven-over 79. McCown was one of nine golfers who shot even par or better on the course's par threes (Kim-Moss was the only other Eagle to accomplish the feat).
McCown also displayed his knowledge of the course by hitting a team high pair of birdies for the round. However, he also double bogeyed a pair of par fours in the middle of the front and back nines.
Carson-Newman first team all-conference selection Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) found himself struggling in the opening round of the tournament. He finished 10-over (82) and tied for 37th. Hay was nine-over through the first six holes. Hay was even the rest of the way, save for a bogey on 16.
The Eagles tee off at 10 a.m. Monday morning for round two of the tournament. Live stats are available at birdiefire.com/sac.
