Gavin Hay ties for second place, Eagles finish tied for fourth in the Rendleman Invitational
SALISBURY, N.C. - Senior Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) tied for second place at the 22nd Annual Richard Rendleman Invitational, Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury.
SALISBURY, N.C. - Senior Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) tied for second place at the 22nd Annual Richard Rendleman Invitational, Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury.
Hay, who shot a round one score of 73 (+2), played his final four holes four-under par to finish the day two-under (69) and in second place alongside Belmont Abbey's John Frisby. Both Hay and Frisby were one stroke behind tournament champion Adam Hedges, who is also from Belmont Abbey.
Head coach John Minor is very proud with Hay's day and was happy that he ended where he did.
"Gavin likes playing at this course and it showed through his performance," Minor said. "Hopefully the next tournament he can take first."
The Eagles end the tournament with a combined team score of 595, tying them in fourth place along with North Greenville University and conference opponent Catawba College. The men's team was 12 strokes shy of tournament winners' no. 14 Belmont Abbey who had a score of 583.
Behind Belmont Abbey was second place team no. 3 South Carolina-Aiken who had a score of 590, just two strokes ahead of third place winners Lenoir-Rhyne.
Carson-Newman finished in front of conference foes Anderson (8th), LMU (12th), Wingate (13th) and Tusculum (17th).
"I wish we could have played better yesterday but with the cold weather conditions it was tough," Minor said, "Despite the cold, we performed a lot better today."
Junior Jonathan Kim-Moss (Mississauga, Canada) shot a 72 (+1) and 76 (+5) putting in a tie for 17th. Senior Michael Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) ended in a tie for 50th following a 79 (+8) and 75 (+4) for rounds one and two.
Freshman Nathan Hodge (Jefferson City, Tenn.) saw massive improvement from day one today two following an 83 (+12) with a 73 (+2) for the second round. He finished in a tie for 60th.
"Nathan turned his round around completely, with a really outstanding 73 today," Minor said.
Just behind, Hodge was junior Rafael Jackson (Rutledge, Tenn.) who finished tied for 64th with scores of 78 (+7) and 79 (+8).
"Overall, everyone stepped up and contributed in this tournament and I am pleased with their performances," Minor said.
Carson-Newman will return to action on March 18, at the Bobcat Invitational in Eatonton, Ga.
