The Carson-Newman men’s golf team shot a consistent score of 304 for each round of the Kiawah Island Tournament Monday and Tuesday. The team ended the event 28 strokes behind the tournament champs USC Aiken.
Carson-Newman head men’s golf coach John Minor said he was pleased with the player's performance in the second round, Tuesday.
"The weather was very windy during the second round of playing, but the players adjusted to it," Minor said. “Some adjusted to weather condition and improved their scores from yesterday."
Senior golfer Gavin Hay (Glasgow, Scotland) finished day two at even par, shooting 72. He shot five over on day one ending with 77, which helped to end him in the tournament with a combining score of 149 tying him in 24th place. Minor said Hay turned things around for round two.
"Gavin improved dramatically in day two. He also improved from our last tournament which he held a score of 157," Minor said.
Rafael Jackson (Rutledge, Tenn.) finished three strokes behind Hays, which tied him 43rd for the tournament. Jackson shot five over Monday with a 77 and three over Tuesday with a 75 for a combined score of 152.
Coach Minor said the team made adjustments to the weather, which will help the team in later tournaments.
"Overall we played decent in round two. We didn't necessarily move in the direction I had imagined we would in day one," Minor said, “But the team certainly began to head in a successful direction on day two just by improving their individual games.”
