ALBANY, Ga. – Carson-Newman turned in its highest score of the week in Tuesday's final round to close out the Hurricane Invitational in fifth-place at the Doublegate Country Club.
The Eagles carded a 295 through the final 18 holes to slide down one spot from Monday's conclusion, leaving with a 14-over total of 878. Despite the 7-over day, C-N was the third-best par-3 scoring unit with a 12-over average at 3.20. It was on par for 167 holes throughout the week, tied for the fourth-most in the event.
"Disappointing finish," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "Usually, we finish pretty strong. Today we let a top-three finish get out of our grasp with some poor play this morning. Cant' wait to play again."
Alex Hodge (Knoxville, Tenn.) maintained his spot in leading the Eagles for a second day, moving down to a tie for eighth with an even 216. He was six shots higher than both of his opening rounds on Tuesday with a 76 in Tuesday's round. After shooting for par or better on multiple holes Monday, the senior went 4-over with four bogeys, three of those coming in Tuesday's back nine. For the event, he tied for sixth on par-5 scoring at five-under and the ninth-most par holes with 37.
Will Collins (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the only Eagle to score in the red for the final round, shooting a 1-under 71 to move up to a tie for 12th with a 218. The junior went 2-over for the event after firing three birdies and a pair of bogeys on Tuesday. His 10 birdies on the week were the most for the entire team.
Much like Collins, Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) also fired his best round of the week, shaving two strokes off of his opening round scores with a 73 on Tuesday to tie for 31st. He was 1-over in the final 18 with a trio of birdies, a pair of bogeys and a double-bogey on the 4-par 3rd hole. He joined Hodge among those tied for sixth on par-5 scoring with a 4.58 clip.
The highest round score of the day among the Eagles came from Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) with an 81, moving him to a tie for 53rd at 13-over. He was 9-over on Tuesday with nine bogeys, doubling his bogey output for the first two rounds combined. In all 13 of his bogeys in the event, 11 came on par-4 holes. Like Hodge, his 37 par holes were ninth-most in the field.
With a 75 in the final round, Alec Lambert (Palm Harbor, Fla.) moved up seven spots to finish at 72nd with an 18-over 234. He was already at 3-over heading into the turn with just one birdie, a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4 eighth hole. He stayed even in the back nine on a pair of birdies and bogeys. He finished out with eight birdies.
Lander won the event at 1-over with an 865 after carding a 288 in the final round. Clayton State and Georgia Southwestern rounded out the top three at second and third, respectively.
Newberry's Patrick Jacobs was the top medalist at the event with a 7-under 209 after carding a week-low 64 for all players in the field. Lander's Maxime Legros and Montevallo's Paul Murphy tied for second at 5-under.
Carson-Newman spends a week away from tournament play before heading to Greenwood, S.C. for the Lander Bearcat Classic. That two-day event starts on March 8 at the Greenwood Country Club.
