Former Eagle Hurt joining James Madison men’s golf staff
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Two years removed from closing out his Carson-Newman career, former men’s golfer Will Hurt is heading to James Madison as a men’s golf assistant coach for the 2021-22 season, as announced by JMU head coach Carter Cheves on Friday.
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Two years removed from closing out his Carson-Newman career, former men's golfer Will Hurt is heading to James Madison as a men's golf assistant coach for the 2021-22 season, as announced by JMU head coach Carter Cheves on Friday.
The Powell, Tenn. native joins the Dukes by way of Berry College where he served as a graduate assistant for both the men's and women's golf teams while pursuing an MBA. While with the Vikings, Hurt was tabbed the 2019-20 Women's Golf Coaches Association Division II Assistant Coach of the Year. The Berry golf programs saw much success during his tenure, including national rankings as high as No. 12 and No. 3 for the men and women, respectively, along with seven Academic All-American plaudits.
Hurt graduated from Carson-Newman in 2019 after spending four years in the Orange and Blue. Throughout his career, he averaged an 80.4 scoring clip through 29 rounds of play. That average was bolstered by a 78.3 clip in the 2017-18 season that saw C-N win a second-straight South Atlantic Conference title.
The Dukes are coming off of a 2020-21 season that resulted in a third-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association championship. They grabbed four top-five finishes throughout the year.
