Lopers jump over the Eagles 5-2 in a non-conference match

ROME, Ga. – Carson-Newman got wins from its first and third singles players, but narrowly missed out on the match with three matches going to a third set.
The women are now 3-7 on the year and have lost the last six straight matches.
"Weird day. Changing time and playing indoors, and we had a lineup change. Our girls still played well. We had three singles go to three sets and if we go full thirds, who knows. Maybe the match swings in our favor," said head coach Nate Gangelhoff. "But give them a lot of credit. They played well, especially in doubles, which is where we are struggling. Hoping to have a good week of practice to prepare for Saturday."
The Eagles were swept in doubles with the first doubles pair of Hala Awad and Abinaya Sweeton dropping narrowly 7-5. Leah McBride and Mar Fraile's match was a 6-2 decision and Andrea Aguiar and Sophia Caminiti fell 6-3.
In singles, Hala Awad continued her great play. The senior beat her opponent 6-4, 6-4 at first singles. She is now 5-1 in solo action on the year.
Kerrigan Spiers was the other victory in the lineup at third singles. The freshman took a 6-1, 6-2 win to improve her singles record to 2-3.
At second singles, Maria del Mar Sarda Marti fell 6-3 in both sets. She is now 3-4 on the year.
Leah McBride battled from a 2-6 loss in set one to take a 6-4 win in set two. In the third set tiebreaker, McBride fell 2-10. Sindija Manovska was similar, losing set one 6-2 but winning set two 6-3. Her tiebreaker was a 10-5 loss.
At six singles, Mar Fraile fought to a 6-4 win in set one but was forced into a third-set tiebreaker after a 6-2 loss in set two. It took 28 tiebreaker points to settle, but ultimately, Fraile would fall 15-13.
Carson-Newman will have the chance to get on the board with a conference win on Saturday when they take on Coker in Hartsville after the men's match at 11:00 AM. For updates, follow @CN_Eagles on X and Instagram, or check cneagles.com for full coverage.
