Sweep of Tusculum hands women’s tennis 6th-ever win against Tusculum
Carson-Newman got two wins at doubles, coupled with dominance from the bottom of the lineup.
GREENVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman got two wins at doubles, coupled with dominance from the bottom of the lineup.
C-N has now won the last three straight matches against the Pioneers and has gotten itself out of a two-match losing skid.
In a match that was supposed to begin right after the men's wrapped up around 2:40. However, rain in Greenville held the women from starting on time, and the Eagles didn't end up getting on court until 5:40.
The delay didn't phase the Eagles, though. The bottom of the doubles lineup delivered big-time for C-N. First, Leah McBride and Mar Fraile scored 6-3 win at third doubles. The two are now 7-6 in doubles this season.
Unfortunately, Hala Awad and Kerrigan Spiers fell 6-3 at first doubles, but they were avenged by Maria del Mar Sarda Marti and Kira Baacke at the second line. They won 6-3, and are 5-6 as a pair this year.
With the doubles point secure, sophomore Mar Fraile delivered in singles, taking a 6-0, 6-2 win at the sixth line. She elevated her singles record to 4-6, and gave C-N a 2-0 lead.
The next win came from Leah McBride at five. The junior won in matching sets 6-2, 6-2 to make her 5-6 in solo play this season.
The win was secured by Maria del Mar Sarda Marti. In third singles, the senior took a 6-3, 6-1 win. Now, she is 5-5 in her singles matches in 2026.
Hala Awad was a point away from winning her match at first singles. The senior went up 6-1 in the first set and was winning 5-1 in the second when Mar Sarda Marti clinched.
Kira Baacke won her first set 6-3, but was down 5-2 in the second when the match finished up. Kerrigan Spiers' match also went unfinished at the second line. Spiers had lost the first set 6-4 but was winning 2-1 in the second before the close.
Now, C-N is 7-9 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. They currently sit in a tie with Anderson for 7th place in the SAC.
Now back in the win column, the Eagles return home to Jefferson City on Saturday for senior day against Pikeville. The senior day festivities will take place at 12:00 PM at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex with the match to follow.
