C-N Looks to Respond, Heading to Anderson for a Friday Twin Bill
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (17-9, 4-2 SAC) looks for a bounce back effort in its second road trip of the week, heading to Anderson (15-13, 1-5 SAC) for a pair of contests on Friday afternoon.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (17-9, 4-2 SAC) looks for a bounce back effort in its second road trip of the week, heading to Anderson (15-13, 1-5 SAC) for a pair of contests on Friday afternoon.
C-N's offense was mostly silenced in a road trip to Wingate, scoring five runs in two games against the Bulldogs. Wingate collected 21 runs on 28 hits on Wednesday, clicking on all cylinders en route to handing C-N its first two South Atlantic Conference losses of 2025.
One of the bright spots for the Eagles on Wednesday was the continued ability to use the long ball to their advantage. C-N added to its Division II-leading tally with three home runs on Wednesday with solo shots from Syerra Rogers (Graysville, Tenn.), Brooklyn Lucero (Loma, Colo.), and Kennady Warder (Harrodsburg, Ky.). The Eagles' 41 home runs remain the nation's top mark.
On Friday, C-N looks for a response, traveling to Anderson to face a Trojans squad who has seen its fair share of struggles in 2025. The Trojans dropped four of their first five South Atlantic Conference contests, and the lone win came in a doubleheader split with Newberry. However, three of the five Anderson losses have been decided by two runs or less.
Anderson's offense is 7th in the South Atlantic Conference in batting average (.313). A big strength of the Trojans' offense has been the ability to work free passes, drawing 105 walks, the third-best mark in the SAC.
The Trojans have six hitters with batting averages above .300. Jenna Davis, the top hitter in the Anderson order in batting average (.416), has also been an extra-base hit threat, ripping a team-high four triples through 28 games. Carson Hobbs is the top RBI threat in 2025, knocking in 24 through 27 appearances. Paige Vickery is the only other Trojan with 20+ RBIs this season, scoring 21. Anderson has hit 18 home runs as a team, but they have been spread through the roster with five players mashing three home runs apiece.
Anderson is 10th in the South Atlantic Conference in team ERA (5.26), just ahead of Carson-Newman (5.48). The Trojans are one of the five teams in the conference to allow 100+ runs in 2025, allowing 133 through 28 games, the third-highest total in the SAC behind Newberry and Catawba.
Anderson's top arm is Katie Morris, who throws a team-high 72 innings. Morris has a 4.38 ERA and is the current SAC leader in strikeouts with 78. Carson Hobbs and Caroline Morgan are the other heavy contributors to the Trojan pitching staff, combining for 71.2 innings of work. Hobbs holds a 4-3 record and a 5.84 ERA across 37 innings and has struck out 34 compared to only ten walks. Eleven of Hobbs' 14 appearances have come in relief. Morgan has started eight contests with 14 appearances, posting an 11.16 ERA and a 2-2 record. Morgan has walked 39 hitters to just 14 strikeouts.
The Eagles and Trojans prepare to square off for the 63rd and 64th time with C-N leading the all-time series, 40-21. However, Anderson holds a five-game winning streak over C-N, including two wins in the 2024 South Atlantic Conference tournament.
In the two postseason contests, the Trojans outscored the Eagles 20-1, with 16 of those runs coming in a 16-0 shutout win to end the Eagles' 2024 campaign.
There were only two-run scoring hits in the first game, both home runs. AU's Ava Worthy blasted a grand slam in the sixth before Abbi Martin (Gadsden, Ala.) hit a solo shot to cut into the lead in the 7th, but it would be the only threat C-N posed in the final frame.
It was all Trojans in game two, using a pair of big innings with six in the first and eight in the fourth to end C-N's season with a run-rule victory.
C-N looks to snap a five-game losing streak against Anderson and get back in the win column in a tightly packed South Atlantic Conference with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Friday.
