INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Carson-Newman joins the likes of Wingate, Anderson, and Lenoir-Rhyne listed as under consideration for the NCAA tournament.
The alphabetical listing is the first of three region rankings that the NCAA publicizes leading up to the NCAA tournament. The rankings, which move to 1-10 next week, are the official poll utilized by the NCAA in the championship selection process and will continue to be released each week by the NCAA Division II Women's Indoor Volleyball Committee up to the NCAA Championship selections.
Aside from the four SAC schools receiving consideration, four schools from the Peach Belt Conference are also represented in the Southeast regional including Augusta (21-6), Flagler (16-11), Lander (16-7), and Francis Marion (18-8). Two schools from the Conference Carolinas round out teams under consideration with Converse (19-6) and Emmanuel (15-8).
In terms of RPI, Carson-Newman and Flagler both slot in with a .592. While Carson-Newman has the better record, Flagler holds the edge in strength of schedule with the most challenging schedule in the region. As it stands, C-N is currently 5th in the RPI rankings in the Southeast region, while Flagler is 6th.
C-N has the 11th hardest strength of schedule in the Southeast, but has done a good job taking care of regional opponents this year. The Eagles took down FMU, North Greeneville, USC Aiken, and all SAC opponents aside from the three other teams under consideration in the region.
Carson-Newman's KPI is 47th in the nation and 4th in the region at .253. Their worst loss on the season was a three set sweep against the LR Bears at home in mid-September.
