ROCK HILL, S.C. - In the last week of weekly honors from the SAC, Maddie Hurst picks up offensive player of the week following a record breaking hitting percentage performance.
With the postseason beginning tomorrow, the sun sets on the weekly honors for the SAC WePlayed Volleyball players of the week, and Maddie Hurst received the final offensive player of the week nod.
The sophomore has been great all season, and her climb has been apparent. The reigning SAC Freshman of the Year has fought back from an offseason surgery, becoming one of the most dominant players in the SAC at just the right time. She has now recorded five games in a row with 10 or more kills.
"We couldn't be more proud of Maddie. She has worked so hard this season to come back from her surgery. She has grown into a disciplined blocker and has worked hard in growing her IQ as an attacker, " said Cat Collins.
This past week, Hurst was especially good. In the match against UVA Wise, Hurst batted down a team leading 16 kills en route to a three-set sweep. She was more than efficient, making just one error on 26 swings to hit .577.
If that wasn't enough, Hurst pushed the boundary in the final game of the season against Newberry. The sophomore landed 22 kills on 31 swings with just one error. With a .677 attacking percentage, she seated herself at the top of the record books in single game hitting percentage. Earlier in the year, Annie Dziczkowski tied the single game hitting percentage record, a mark that was previously set by Kaina Roehrkasse on September 7, 2019. Depending on how the rest of the season goes, Hurst has the potential to land in the top five in single-season hitting percentage. As of November 17th, she sits 3rd in the single-season record books.
Her 22 kills was the third time this season she has eclipsed the 20 kill mark and her two games in double-digit kills were the 12th and 13th game this season she has hit that accomplishment.
"She has added so much depth to her game this season. This past week is a great example of the work that she has done this season. She is reliable and is a great play maker on the offensive and defensive end for us," said Collins.
Her totals for the week include a 5.24 kills per set mark, a .627 hitting percentage, and 38 total kills. This is her first weekly honor from the SAC.
With help from her performance, the Eagles finished their regular season with two wins and have the four seed in the SAC tournament and take on UVA Wise at Holt Fieldhouse on November 18th.
