Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson gets his second crack at career win 400. Benson won his 300th career game on his second try, losing to Newberry on opportunity number one before beating UVA Wise for win 400. Benson and the dean of SAC coaches Wingate's Brian Good are the only active coaches in the league with 300 wins, let alone 400. Good's 412 career victories in 31 seasons as a head coach are the most among active coaches in the league.
On the opposite bench for Augusta is Southeast Region coaching legend Dip Metress. With 458 career wins at Augusta, Metress is the winningest coach in Peach Belt Conference history. Metress is 3-0 all-time against Carson-Newman, winning in his first season in 2004-05 and twice more during the 2006-07 season.
Carson-Newman saw its eight-game non-conference winning streak snapped in its 75-72 loss at North Georgia Wednesday. Carson-Newman has won nine consecutive home non-conference games dating back to a 94-85 New Year's Eve loss to Lander in 2022.
Jack Browder enters the contest on 1,451 career points. He is 16th all-time in Carson-Newman history in scoring. Browder's closing in on Jerry Cannon who is 11 points away with 1,462 in 15th. The top 13 is very much in range with 14th place David Mills sitting 20 points away with 1,471, and Hall of Famer Kyle Gribble in 13th with 1,472 one point beyond that. From there, it's aways to go before catching Antoine Davis and his 1,526 points.
With 661 career rebounds, Browder is sixth among active Division II players in career rebounds. When her gets to 1,500 career points, he will join Mike Ogan, Tommy Everette, Charles Clark, Sawyer Williams and Antoine Davis as the sixth player in school history with 1,500 career points and 500 career rebounds. When he gets to 700 career rebounds, it will be Browder, Ogan and Everette as the only players in school history as members of that club. Browder is looking to become the sixth player in school history with 700 career boards.
Carson-Newman's bench scored 95 points in its first four games of the season. The Eagles non-starters accounted for 332 points all last season. Carson-Newman is more than a quarter of the way to the bench's scoring output last season. Oli Smith scored 22 points off the bench in the opener against King, the first player to come off the bench and score 20 or more since Ren Dyer's 20-point night against Lincoln Memorial on Jan. 31, 2024. There have been seven 20-point nights off the bench since 2022.
