JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (12-8, 7-7 South Atlantic Conference) heads into the hills of southwest Virginia Wednesday night for a key Southeast Region and SAC contest against UVA Wise (17-5, 10-4 SAC) at 7:30 p.m. in the Prior Convocation Center.
Carson-Newman won the first meeting between the teams, 67-65, back on Dec. 17. The Eagles are aiming for a sweep of the season series, but have lost two of the last three meetings in the Prior Center.
The Cavs are receiving votes in the NABC Coaches Poll.
UVA Wise has the top field goal defense in the South Atlantic Conference, and the number three scoring defense. In the Cavs' last five wins, none of their opponents have shot better than 41 percent from the field.
The Cavs have won three straight and are 9-1 at home. Their lone loss came to Emory & Henry, 83-76, on Dec. 10. Since then, they've won five straight, including two in that stretch over nationally-ranked foes Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne.
Carson-Newman won the first meeting with the Cavs 67-65 on Dec. 17. Keliese Frye hit the game-winning layup with 27 seconds left. Carson-Newman had led by nine, 61-52 with 4:32 remaining after a Matt Bilbrey elbow jumper. UVA Wise erased an early 15-point second half lead after the Eagles put together a 12-1 run spanning the halftime break before Frye's heroics
Jack Browder enters the contest on 1,824 career points. He is eighth all-time in scoring. The lone player in school history with his jersey retired, Arnold Mellinger is next to catch on the all-time scoring list with 1,826 points. Browder is two away from him. In a serendipitous moment, Browder can bypass Mellinger against his grandson's team. UVA Wise head coach Blake Mellinger is in his 13th season coaching his alma mater. Browder is sixth among active NCAA Division II players in career scoring and 19th among all players in all divisions.
With 822 career rebounds, Browder is fourth among active Division II players in career rebounds. Browder, plus Hall of Famers Mike Ogan and Tommy Everette are the only three members of the 1,500/700 club in Carson-Newman history. Browder is the only player in the NCAA era to do that.
Browder is one of three active players in college basketball with 1,800 career points and 800 career rebounds. Carl Cleveland at Young Harris and Gonzaga's Graham Ike are the only others in the NCAA. Browder's 822 rebounds are the fifth-most in school history.
With 36 career double-doubles, Browder already has career mark for Carson-Newman for all-time double-doubles (at least in the NCAA era where we have game-by-game stats). He has the most double-doubles among active NCAA Division II players. He has the eighth-most double-doubles amongst players in all divisions. Browder's 11 double-doubles this year lead the SAC and are fourth nationally.
Browder is the only player in NCAA Division II to lead his league in scoring and rebounding. Browder is also the only player in the country in the top 25 in both scoring and rebounding. Browder is fifth in scoring at 22.6 points per game and 12th in rebounding at 10.2 boards per game.
Tipoff from the Prior Convocation Center is 7:30 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network starts at 7:15 p.m. with the AEC Countdown to Tipoff on Mix 105.5 (WSEV-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live. A view of press row will be available with the ESN crew's call on YouTube.
