Men’s golf hopes for continued development at Tennessee River Rumble
Carson-Newman Men’s Golf will play their next event about an hour down the road in Lenoir-City at Wind River Golf Club in penultimate regular season tournament.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman Men's Golf will play their next event about an hour down the road in Lenoir-City at Wind River Golf Club in penultimate regular season tournament.
After the best finish of the season, placing 8th following the final round of the Ralph Hargett Memorial, the Eagles were tied at +14 with Ferris State. The Eagles fell three spots in the standings after their worst round being the final 18 of the tournament, posting a team score of +10. That was a seven-stroke difference from their next highest round. Their tie for 8th was three strokes off #46 Lenoir-Rhyne.
"Decent tournament for the Eagles through this was not the final round we had planned," said head coach Randy Wylie. "Dylan Frein played a solid final round which kind of held it together for the team. Overall, I can definitely see some improvement as we work toward the postseason."
This week, they will face familiar competition in the Tennessee River Rumble, hosted by Lincoln Memorial.
Out of 18 teams in the field, eight of them are ranked higher than C-N. The Eagles are just outside the top 50 in Division II, at #60. Not only will Carson-Newman have another chance at some top-ranked competition, but they will also have the task of defending their position from multiple other teams floating around that same number.
Ferris State and Belmont Abbey are both in 60's in the national rankings and will be looking to inch up the rankings just the same as C-N. The Eagles will also have the opportunity to face three top-10 teams: #1 Grand Valley State, #5 Wingate, and #9 Catawba will all be competing at the Tennessee River Rumble. #11 North Georgia and #20 LMU will also be in the field.
This is the second-to-last regular season tournament for men's golf as well. Eagle fans can look forward to watching how the Eagles stack up against the nine SAC schools in the field. Mars Hill and UVA Wise are the only SAC schools not participating in the tournament.
As for the track, Wind River was designed by Jack Nicklaus protege, Bob Cupp, and overlooks Tellico Lake. It is a par-72 playing 7,453 from the back tees and features Zoysia greens. It is also Tennesees first Audubon course. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP) is an award-winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. The program helps golf officials enhance valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide, improve efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf operations per the USGA.

Last season at the Tennessee River Rumble, C-N Men's Golf recorded a 15th place finish. Stefans Spruzs, Ian Schoonmaker, and Owen Larson all played in the event where Spruzs was the best finisher out of the group.
Carson-Newman Men's Golf will tee off for 36 holes the morning of March 23rd before the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The weather on both days is set to be partly cloudy and 67 degrees.
