Strong non-conference opponents highlight challenging week for men’s tennis
The Eagles will battle Middle Georgia State on Friday and host #15 Lee on Tuesday.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Eagles will battle Middle Georgia State on Friday and host #15 Lee on Tuesday.
The men's tennis team is fresh off a 5-2 loss to Young Harris. However, Leo Baeker collected his second singles win of the year against the Mountain Lions, and Max Stollecker improved to 3-0 in his singles matches. At doubles, Louis Keenan and Stollecker have won their last three matches in a row.
C-N's lone win on the year was a 4-3 win over King last weekend. The Eagles will be in search of their second win this season against Middle Georgia State and #15 Lee. MGSU is an important regional opponent that carries a strong roster despite their recent shift from NAIA to D2, while Lee mades a chance to add a signature win to their resume and improve their chances at the NCAA Regional.
This is the first recorded match between the Knights and Eagles. Middle Georgia State is 1-1 on the season, dropping their first contest of the season to #2 Valdosta. However, the Knights challenged the Blazers, taking two points off the match. MGSU swept the doubles point, and Alexandr Achour took home a singles victory at the number three slot.
Then, Carson-Newman will host #15 Lee on Tuesday, February 24th. The Flames have not played in a match as of the time of writing; however, they will face Delta State on Saturday before the match with the Eagles.
In the fall, the Flames took home multiple first-place honors in the Gulf South Conference's Fall Championships. Lee's Filipe Krohn took home a championship at Flight 1 singles, while Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen won Flight 1 doubles; this pair is currently ranked #4 in the ITA's South Region Doubles standings. To add on, Lee had a team/player in the championship match of every flight in both singles and doubles.
The Flames and Eagles have played 11 all-time matches, and Lee has a healthy 9-2 lead in the series. Carson-Newman has lost the last five matches between the teams, with its last win coming in February of 2014.
The Eagles match with Middle Georgia State was originally scheduled for Saturday, but has been shifted to Friday with caution due to weather. The coaches and staff will continue to monitor the weather for Friday's match to determine time and location.
