NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman defensive back Isaiah Cane (Antioch, Tenn.) has earned state defensive player of the week honors from the Tennessee Sportswriters' Association, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cane is the second Eagle to win the award this season following Cruz Temple.
The junior corner had a pick, three tackles and two pass breakups in Carson-Newman's 24-16 win over Catawba, Saturday.
His interception came nicely, with 69 seconds remaining, preserving the Eagles' win over the Catawba Indians. The Eagles held Catawba 20 points below their season scoring average and to 4-of-13 on third down against a team that was leading the nation in third down efficiency. Catawba scored just one touchdown in five trips into the red zone as well, with Cane's INT ending the final drive.
Cane will be in action Saturday when the Eagles head to Setzler Field to take on Newberry.
Kickoff between the Eagles and Newberry is set for 1 p.m. Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins at noon with the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), MIX 105.5 (WSEV-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live. A video stream is available with a subscription to FloCollege at cneagles.com/FloFB. The ESN also allows you to go "Inside the Radio Booth" with a live feed of the ESN crew on YouTube.
