JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a historic season last year where Carson-Newman Women's Golf made the Southeast regional for the first time since 2010, the Eagles will open up the fall slate with an intimate look at what they will be facing come the championship season.
After a competitive few weeks of qualifying, second-year head coach Alyssa Montgomery is excited to get going.
"I'm just looking forward to finally get everyone on the course. We got a few new freshmen who are going to be joining us out there, so it'll be exciting to kind of see how they do under pressure and in a college situation. But I know they're just excited to be out there on the course competing again and I'm excited to see it for them," she said.
The Eagles will travel down to Cleveland, Tennessee, where C-N will compete in a field of 16 teams all within the region. Cleveland Country Club will play host to the D2 Southeast Regional preview.
The 72-hole event will be played at 5,997 yards and will certainly pose many challenges for the golfers in the field.
"I think the biggest thing is placing the ball off the tee. There's some little funky holes out there, some dog legs, some up and down hills, so as long as they can find a spot, put the ball in play, they'll be doing pretty good," said Montgomery.
Not only will this be an opportunity for Carson-Newman to scout what they will be up against in the spring, but it will also give both the coaches and players an idea of where they stack up among the NCAA.
Three of the top 10 teams in the country will participate in the Southeast regional preview, along with seven of the top 20. Carson-Newman ended last season ranked 33rd in the nation, but will have some tough competition to improve their ranking.
"The biggest thing is just understanding that this is a strong field, so it's gonna be a great place to go out there and kind of see how we rank up against everyone. Biggest thing, go out there, have fun shoot some good scores, and see what happens from there," Montgomery said.
With so many new players for the Eagles this season, anything can happen. The women's intended lineup from one to five includes Emery Fisher, Anaelle Picot, Riley Tucker, Grace Lambert, and Parker Miller. The Eagles will also be bringing along Madison Miller as an individual.
Three out of the six players representing Carson-Newman this weekend have never played collegiate golf. This will be the first look at the young talent for the Eagles.
"The biggest surprise is probably going to be seeing how our new freshmen do. We got a couple of them in the lineup, we got an individual spot out there too. So seeing how many birdies can we go out and make, how can we just excel on the golf course this week?"
Women's golf will tee it for the first time Monday morning at 8 am where they will play 36 holes and wrap up the event with 18 on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available on the Clipped website.
