Eagles sit in the top five after two rounds at the St. Simons Intercollegiate
With a ten-stroke improvement from round one to two, Carson-Newman sits three strokes out of third place with three players in the top 25.
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – With a ten-stroke improvement from round one to two, Carson-Newman sits three strokes out of third place with three players in the top 25.
With a round one score of +17, the Eagles sat in 6th place. Anaelle Picot led the way for the Eagles, carding a one-over 73. The graduate student made three birdies on the back nine to come in with a 34. Despite two bogeys on the first and second hole, Picot would make three pars to finish the round.
Rylee Tucker was the next best for the Eagles in round one. Tucker started with three bogeys in her first four holes, but rallied with a birdie on the par three 15th and the par five 3rd to notch a 75 (+3) for C-N.
Grace Lambert was the final Eagle in the 70's on day one. Lambert overcame a double at the 14th with a birdie on the par four 16th and also birdied the par five 3rd to bring home a 77 (+5).
Emery Fisher was not far behind in round one. The junior made eight pars and one bogey on the front nine to card the best front nine for any of the Eagle golfers on the day, but struggled on the back to come in at 80 (+8).
Madison Miller was the final finisher for C-N. The freshman made 11 pars throughout the day for a 12-over 84.
With a first-round score of 305 (+17), the Eagles had to battle through more than golf course conditions. A last-minute schedule change to play the first round on Sunday meant C-N had to adjust quickly after an 11-hour van ride and a late-night arrival to their practice round on Saturday.
"All things considered, the first round was good. The girls were running on very little sleep from having to move around travel plans, but they did a great job navigating a difficult course," said head coach Alyssa Montgomery. "Annelle and Rylee really stepped up, fighting hard to post two really great opening rounds."
Following a full night of sleep, the second round went swimmingly for Carson-Newman, which had the third-best team round of the day and jumped two spots in the team rankings.
All five Eagles were in the 70s in round two. Emery Fisher led the way with a phenomenal round of one under. She was one of nine golfers under par for the day in the entire field. Fisher birdied the 8th and 9th holes, but bookened those birdies with two bogeys. The junior was even par through 13 holes when she made birdie on the par five 18th and the par five 3rd. With a two-day total of +7, Fisher is 22nd in the field of 100 women.
Tucker continued her great play and improved by two strokes in the second round for 73 (+1). Tucker made a birdie on her second hole of the day on the par four 6th and would follow that with 10 straight pars. Despite three bogeys in her last six holes, the freshman birdied the par-five 3rd to finish her round strong. At +4 over the two rounds, Tucker is tied for 11th with Picot.
Picot was the third Eagle to shoot under par on the front nine at King and Prince GC. With two birdies on the par-five 3rd and one at the par-three 7th, Picot went out with a 35. The France native fought through two doubles on the back to birdie the 14th and 16th holes and finish at 75 (+3). Picot is tied with Tucker at +4 for 11th place.
Miller made an eight-stroke improvement in her second round to shoot 76 (+4). Miller was even par through ten holes after recording back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th. With three bogeys in a row from hole 17-1, Miller would battle with a birdie at the par-three fourth. Miller is currently +16 through two rounds and 63rd in the individual standings.
Grace Lambert made 10 pars throughout her second round and birdied the par four 1st hole in her final five holes to keep herself in the 70s. The freshman is +12 through 36 holes and sits in the top half of the standings at 49th.
"Anaelle has been a top competitor on the team in the first two events, but it was very exciting seeing Rylee step up and join her and have a great couple of days as well. Overall, the girls have been cruising through the course, and I am excited to see them finish it out tomorrow," said Montgomery.
With the improvement in round two, Carson-Newman is fourth in the team standings at +25. Lincoln Memorial trails the Eagles by a stroke, and the Eagles trail Flagler by three. Wingate is currently in the lead at the event with a two-day team score of one under.
Flagler ended last year second in the national rankings while Wingate was fourth. The Eagles are currently beating Lander, who finished #19 in the rankings in 2024, and trail West Florida (#24) by nine strokes.
Carson-Newman will wrap up the St. Simons Intercollegiate tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM. Live scoring is available on the Clippd website: https://scoreboard.clippd.com/tournaments/240805/scoring/team.
